Daventry is the name of the world and the kingdom where the games King's Quest take place according to the King's Quest Companion (in the games, the world is referred to as "Earth"). The history and geography of Daventry are not developed in the games, but the franchise sheds more light on its backstory.

According to one backstory, as presented in the King's Quest Companion, humans and magical creatures from Earth, at several points in the past, chose to abandon Earth in favour of magic. They all migrated to the continent of Serenia, and humans, along with mythical creatures which are now forgotten, live together. The world of King's Quest includes elements that resemble various myths, legends and characters from various points of history and mythology. This is explained by the fact that several Withdrawals happened during the course of history, therefore Classical Age legends coexist with Medieval figures next to quasi-Victorian or Elizabethan settings.

Additionally the World of Daventry is in a kind of magical flux, which can cause kingdoms to shift places, disappear completely, or even phase out of reality. Mountains and islands can be built in an instant, or great chasms can rip through the ground.

According to King's Quest Companion, "World of Daventry" (or simply "Daventry") is the name we humans would use for the entire world where King's Quest's lands are located, although this is not the proper name of the planet. Characters in the Companion refer to world as "Daventry" in various chapters. Some fans prefer to refer to that planet as Serenia, which is only a realm of that world. The reason behind this is that civilization spread from Serenia, which was where humans arrived after the first withdrawal.

Alternatively, the manuals for the games, and quotes within the games, imply that King's Quest occurred on Earth sometime in our distant past, rather than in another world. In the references in the games the world is called "Earth".
