Dave Lombardo
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dave Lombardo (Sr.) (February 16, 1965, Havana, Cuba)[1] is a drummer, best known as a member of Slayer.
Lombardo's work with Slayer has been called "astonishingly innovative." [2]
His extremely able playing in all his repertoire and especially his live work has earned him a great reputation and consistent mentions in drum magazines and drum polls.
It should be noted that in addition to Lombardo's work with Slayer that innovated and brought about his creativity, Lombardo is also an exceptionally skilled jazz drummer, as seen on his work with John Zorn and on Grip Inc. and Fantômas.

[edit] Early life
Lombardo was born February 16, 1965 in Havana, Cuba. At age two, his parents left Cuba and made way for California. At a young age, Lombardo started to play the drums, which led to a successful career in music.
[edit] Slayer
After co-founding thrash metal pioneers Slayer in 1981, Dave Lombardo left the band in 1986 briefly during the Reign in Blood tour and was replaced by Tony Scaglione of Whiplash. However, after the tour was over, Lombardo came back and asked to rejoin Slayer. Lombardo was asked to leave the band in 1992 due to conflicts with other members, including his desire to bring his wife on tour with the group.
The band recruited former Forbidden drummer Paul Bostaph as Lombardo's replacement. He would become Slayer's primary drummer until 2001, when he left due to an elbow injury that would hinder his ability to play.[3] At this point Lombardo rejoined the band and has stayed with them since.
During the 2006 Unholy Alliance tour, Kerry King has stated that Dave Lombardo is a major attraction for the fans, and one of the reasons for their surge in popularity. King states that he wishes Paul Bostaph no ill will but prefers playing with Lombardo, as do the other band members.[4]
[edit] Other work
After leaving Slayer in 1992, Lombardo formed the band Grip Inc.
On July 6, 2004, he and Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison, filled in for Metallica's drummer Lars Ulrich at the Download Festival in Donington, England after Ulrich was hospitalised.
Lombardo is also featured prominently in sculptor/filmmaker Matthew Barney's 1999 film, Cremaster 2.
He is also known for his work with other musicians such as Fantômas, Testament, Apocalyptica, John Zorn and recently, recording Drums of Death with DJ Spooky. Rumors say that he played drums for D.R.I. on their Dealing With It album in 1985, but it was never confirmed. Lombardo also took part in the Modern Drummer Festival in 2000.
[edit] Private life
Lombardo is married and has two sons. He lives in Victorville, California. As far as is known, he is not related to former Descendents bassist Tony Lombardo.
