Date Tanemune (伊達 稙宗? 1488-16 July 1565), known as the shugo of Mutsu in 1522 during the Sengoku period of the 16th century. Tanemune created the Jinkaishu in 1536, the official Date family house code. At that time, the Osaki family were suffering from much internal strife, so Tanemune intervened on their behalf. Tanemune brought his second son as heir under their house to gain their influence. During 1542, Tanemune proposed to send his third son, Sanemoto to be adopted by the likes of the Uesugi. Another one of Tanemune's son's known as Harumune opposed this. This antagonism between him and his son soon escalated into what is called the Tenbun no ran.

Tanemune was enjoying an initial advantage, but later on the Soma and Asahina families supported the likes of Harumune, giving him the upperhand. Due to this fact, in 1548, Tanemune was forced to retire, and give up his position to Harumune. The battle ended up in many rifts between the Date retainers, causing many problems to follow the Date, leaving it weakened.
