Dartmouth A.F.C.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dartmouth A.F.C. is a football club based in Dartmouth, Devon, England, playing in the Devon County League. One of their most famous former players is Ralph Birkett who left Dartmouth to play for Torquay United and went on to play for England.
They were established in 1908 as Dartmouth United and began competing in the Torbay and District League. They later moved into the Plymouth and District League and won that league 5 times, but went back to the South Devon League for the 1968-69 season. In their first three seasons in that league they finished top twice and second the other time. In 1995, United finished as runners-up in the South Devon League, winning automatic promotion to the Devon County League. They finished 4th in their first season and the following season (1995-96) won the Premier League Cup, and finished runners-up in both the League and League Cup.
In May/June 1999 Dartmouth United and Dartmouth Y.M.R.C. amalgamated to form Dartmouth A.F.C. The new club won the Devon County League title in 2001-02 and 2002-03, but have opted to remain in the Devon League rather than climb the non-league pyramid.
They are currently (September 2006) managed by former Torquay United player Jamie Bennelick, who has managed to hold on to such Superstars such as the Brooke brothers and Robie 'the moaner' bowks. Such players have been able to hold together some of the lesser abled players, such as bennelick himself, Stevie White & mark Collins
