Darkvision

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game darkvision refers to the ability of a creature to see in the dark. It allows the creature to discern shapes (as in normal, daylight vision) but only in shades of grey. Darkvision was introduced in the 3rd edition of the game, and replaced infravision.

Infravision allowed creatures to discern shapes by detecting infrared radiation, similar to wearing night vision goggles. Like darkvision, infravision allowes a creature to see in complete darkness, though not darkness that is magical in origin.

The ability is found commonly in creatures that live underground. Some examples include the drow, mind flayers, and minotaurs. Player races that have darkvision include dwarves and half-orcs. A more common trait for player races is low-light vision, which is similar to darkvision. It extends the distance a creature can see in "low-light", rather than allowing vision in no light.
