Dark Rift(Space Dynamites in Japan) is a sci-fi oriented 3D fighting game for the Nintendo 64. It revolves around eight fighters wielding various weapons fighting for the survival of not only themselves, but also the survival of the universe.
Though using the style of traditional 3D fighters, Dark Rift adds a bit more into the mix to make it all the more interesting. Firstly, the usage of unique characters with differing storylines, using old-school polygon graphics but smooth, slick animation, coupled with graphic effects not seen in any other fighting game at the time (use of additional coloring to coincide with explosions and other effects close to the characters). Secondly, as opposed to other fighting games at the time, the story of Dark Rift is set in the future as opposed to the past or the current present.
[edit] Story
The legend of Dark Rift centers on the powerful Master Key, an ancient artifact that was forged to lock away all the forces and secrets of the cosmos. The Key was then divided into Prime Elements, which were sent to separate circles of reality for safekeeping. Two tyrants hold pieces of the Key: Sonork Nezom, who controls the Core Prime Element, and the Lord Demon Demitron, who has the Dark Prime Element imbedded in his head.
Offering his element as a prize, Sonork is holding a fighting tournament to lure the unknown holder of the Light Prime Element into his dimension. Sonork is so certain that he can defeat this mystery fighter that he's already plotting to use the two pieces of the Key to destroy Demitron and take control of the cosmos.
[edit] Trivia
- The character Gore is similar to the fighter Gorm from the PlayStation game Criticom, another Vic Tokai 3D fighting game.
