Darius Hawthorne is a fictional character on the American television series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, played by Columbus Short.
[edit] Personal history
Darius began his existence on the show as a stand-up comedian working at various clubs, trying to get discovered. When Simon Stiles convinced Matt Albie to come with him to see another comedian as an example of a potential black writer for the show. When the comedian turned out to be a disappointment, spending his talent on racist comedy which reenforced black stereotypes, Simon was disgusted and walked out. Later, when having drinks with Matt and discussing the potential for good comedy based on the differences between the races, Matt overhears Darius's routine. They go in and find Darius doing a much more intelligent act, although it is much less warmly received by the audience. Matt declares that Darius "just needs discipline," and he and Simon later confront Darius in his dressing room and offer him a job as a staff writer for Studio 60.
As a writer for the show, Darius spent most of his first few days, as Matt had advised him to, hanging around the rest of the crew and silently learning, only contributing when he was directly asked for his opinion. Five days after he was hired, though, Ricky Tahoe and Ron Oswald left the show, taking all of the writing staff with them save for Darius and Lucy Kenworthy. As portrayed in the episode B-12, Darius and Lucy spent an entire week trying to write a single sketch, working under the guidance of Andy Mackinaw. While the sketch was ultimately cut due to a hostage situation gone bad, their efforts earned them the respect of Matt and Andy and gave them precious experience that they would need as their careers progressed.
