Daphny van den Brand, (born April 6, 1978 in Zeeland) is a Dutch cyclo-cross, road bicycle and mountain bike racer.
Daphny van den Brand started her cycling career at the age of eight. She also took part in races at a very young age and was able to win a lot of those races, even when her opponents were boys. Her sprint turned out to be her main skill and at a certain point she won almost all the sprints she participated in.
Van den Brand joined the Dutch junior team, which raced on a higher level, but that didn't her much as she was winning her races in this class as well. Unless that there were a few riders that were able to beat her every now and then. She won her first medal as a junior in 1993 during the cyclo-cross race in Sint-Michielsgestel, where she finished in 3rd position.
Dutch mountain bike manager Leo van Zeeland asked her in 1994 wether she would like to race on a mountain bike or not. Van den Brand answered positive and took part in a race in Bergschenhoek where she finished in 5th position right away. In addition she raced the European and World Junior Mountain biking Championships and finished in seventh position in both races.
Van den Brand choose not to race any more road races, but choose to develop in mountain biking and cyclo-cross. This decision brought her a lot of success. In the following years she would win eight Dutch National Cyclo-cross Championships and she was Cyclo-cross World Champion in 2003 in Monopoli. She also won four bronze medals on other World Championship occasions, a silver at the European Championship in 2005 and a gold at the 2006 UCI Cyclo-cross European Championships. In mountain biking she was less successful, although she won a gold, a silver and a bronze medal during the Dutch National Championships between 2001 and 2003.
