Daphne Fowler

Daphne Fowler (formerly Daphne Hudson) is a British retired bank secretary and game show champion who currently lives in Weston-super-Mare. Since taking early retirement, she has taken part in many televised game shows. She has won many titles, including winning Fifteen to One (twice), Going for Gold and Brain of Britain. She is currently taking part in the game show Eggheads, where she is one of the team of five game show champions challenged daily by a new quiz team.

The game shows she has appeared in include:

  • Winner Takes All (1979)
  • Bullseye (1982)
  • Sale of the Century (1983) — won a Mini, also appeared on (and won) the Australian version.
  • Brain of Britain (1983)
  • Brain of Britain (1984)
  • Masterteam (1986)
  • Going for Gold (1988) — series champion
  • Fifteen to One (1989) — twice series champion, and holds the second-highest single score of all time (432 out of a maximum possible 433)
  • Jeopardy! (1990) — won £2000
  • Runway (1990)
  • Brain of Britain (1997) — winner
  • Masterbrain (1997) — winner
  • 100% Gold (1998)
  • Whitaker's Almanack Champions' Challenge (1998) — winner
  • Mastermind Radio Edition (1999)
  • One to Win (2000)
  • Fifteen to One (2000)
  • Fifteen to One (2001) — series winner
  • Fifteen to One (2001) — series winner
  • Eggheads (2003—)

One of Fowler's best-known quirks is that she frequently strings opponents (and viewers) along by pretending to struggle with questions before giving the correct answer. She also has the unusual ability of being able to remember the dates of birth and death for a large number of famous people. It therefore comes as no surprise that Fowler's favourite subject is history.

Fowler revealed on Eggheads that she studied Theology at Exeter University for two years before dropping out, and in her student years she discovered Scrumpy cider.

Contestants on Eggheads are often guilty of prejudging Fowler based on her 'sweet old lady' appearance, and regularly choose her as their opponent for the sports round, only for the show's host to reveal that sport is actually her strongest subject.
