[edit] Your edits to Sadam Hussein

Hi there, you recently changed a link under Sadam Hussein from President of Iraq to Dictator of Iraq, accidentally breaking the link. The president of Iraq is the technical name of the position, so it would be best if the link remained as such. Thanks. Cowman109Talk 23:42, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

Oh, also, concerning your edits to Everlast (boxing), it's best if people leave their signatures only in discussion pages. While your contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, if everyone signed their changes to articles then each page would be swarmed with signatures! :) Cowman109Talk 23:44, 16 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Helpme request

What help are you looking for? ViridaeTalk 23:21, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

I was wondering what special page are the rectangular templates people put in their user pages reached from?

I am assuming you mean userboxes? They are to be found here: WP:UBX. Any more help, just ask me on my talk page. ViridaeTalk 03:00, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

I see you found it. My apologies for taking so long to reply, but you you should pose your question WHEN you put the {{helpme}} template on the page. That will ensure a quicker result. ViridaeTalk 03:02, 18 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Kobe Bryant

If you're going to move the section about the sexual assault case to it's own page, you should wikify it and fix the references. OhNoitsJamie Talk 01:34, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Curved lens

I fixed all of the double redirect pages, i.e. pages redirecting to either convex lens or concave lens, so that they now redirect to curved lens. There are a bunch of other pages linking to the latter two articles. Can you fix those links? (Go to curved lens and click on "what links here".) Michael Hardy 17:48, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

The "what links here" button should be near the left side of the page, above "related changes". Michael Hardy 17:57, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
Actually, it's better not to "fix" links that redirect, if the redirect page is a better name for the thing. That way, the link still works in the future if pages are reorganized. In this case, links to "convex lens" and "concave lens" are much preferable to direct links to curved lens (particularly since the latter page is not likely to exist in its current form for very long). Redirects are fine. There is no reason in general to pipe links to avoid them. --Srleffler 18:01, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Yes, but i am not changing the link title, rather than make convex lens [[curved lens, I make convex lens the title and curved lens the page. i.e. convex lens. If the problem would come up that somone would delete either convex lens or concave lens, then I would be screwed and there would be dead links.Dan 18:05, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Please do not do this. The article curved lens is not going to stay at that title for long. See talk:curved lens. If you change all those links, someone else is just going to have to change them again. If you leave them as links to convex lens and concave lens, they will work just fine, whatever name the curved lens article ends up with. There is no need to pipe links to eliminate redirects. Redirects are cheap.--Srleffler 18:06, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
I see that you're worried someone might delete convex lens or concave lens. That's the wrong thing to worry about. Noone should delete those articles without fixing the links to them. If someone did, they would either be quickly restored, or someone would fix the links then. There's no need to fix them in advance.--Srleffler 18:08, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Anyway, thanks for the effort. I know you were trying to help out. By the way, the page Wikipedia:Proposed mergers is not a "pages that need to be merged" list. That page is used for marking controversial merge proposals—ones that really need to be discussed first. Most merges are never posted there. The main place to find merge proposals is Category:Articles to be merged, which is automatically filled with articles that have one of the {{merge}} tags on them. Typically articles should sit in that state for five days or so after the merge tags are applied, to allow time for discussion or objections. If a merge is obvious and uncontroversial, it's OK to just go ahead and do it without waiting for discussion though.--Srleffler 21:42, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

I've added the "{{prod}}" template to the article Curved lens, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. The reasons are discussed at talk:Curved lens. --Srleffler 04:38, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your RfA

Hi Daniel,

Could I respectfully suggest you withdraw your RfA. There is almost no chance it will pass as you don't have enough experience for us to adequaltey judge you. I should also note that your request is malformed (you forgot to zero out the tally and didn't sign the acceptance) so could well be removed by an admin. A withdrawal before you get too many opposes would probably look better when you decide to reapply later. Good luck, Gwernol 22:01, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Also, if the opposition votes were to pile up, we wouldn't want to to become disheartened and stop editing Wikipedia, as you're obviously a very valuabe user to have. Your willingness to take on some extra responsibility to help the project shows an awesome dedication. As I noticed you were a bit young, I could refer you to some of the younger administrators who would be quite happy to help you out, should you have any questions or if you just want someone to talk to. Cheers! hoopydinkConas tá tú? 23:03, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Hi Dan, I have actually gone ahead and closed your RfA as it was getting very one-sided and nothing new was being added by those opposing you. As consensus had been decided upon, there was no point in the poll snowballing any further. I hope you are not too disappointed by this outcome and continue contributing to Wikipedia, if you follow the advice given to you by other editors I am sure you will become a valuable admin in the future. If you have any questions please feel free to ask. Yours, Rje 23:38, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Mississippi River pollution

Thanks for your recently contributed paragraph about pollution in the Mississippi River. But, if you haven't noticed, I had to remove it. The text was too obviously copied from elsewhere, even with the minor rearrangement. You can take all the information you want from elsewhere and use it to write your own text from scratch. But simple modification of others' text is still a copyright infringement. There were other problems with the content, too, that I've outlined on that article's text page. Those kinds of statements, particularly, really require hard data to back them up. And referencing the page from which they were copied, unsourced, is not a credible citation. However, some the links on that original page look promising as sources of info for a good paragraph. Maybe you could take another stab at it. Thanks for contributing. --Kbh3rdtalk 01:38, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

I responded to your reply on my talk page in an attempt to make it possible to follow the thread of conversation. If you need to add a follow-up, please do so there. Thanks. --Kbh3rdtalk 03:47, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Hi Dan, I have recently made a similar mistake in putting up for admin too early. Personally, I don't believe an edit count is what makes a good admin, but the value of their edits is more important, which is why I supported you. Anyway, if you keep making a few edits every day then you will have the 1k in no time, and I will happily nominate you in a few months if you keep up the good work!! Seivad 21:34, 20 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Concerning mediation

Hi, there! I'm sorry I took so long to respond to your question on my talk page. Currently I just informally mediate as a member of the Mediation Cabal, and anyone could do so as well. If you are interested in informally mediating cases (I try not to label us as 'mediators', but 'informal mediators' as official mediators are from the Mediation Committee), you are more than welcome to try your hand at new cases in our case list that haven't been looked at, and you can feel free to add yourself to the list of cabalists. Anyway, before you try to mediate a case, it may be a good idea to look at Wikipedia:Mediation Cabal/Suggestions for mediators for some helpful advice, and I cannot recommend enough for you to seek out help at any time if you need it. There is no shame in asking someone else to look over your work to make sure everything is going alright. Does that clear things up a bit? Cowman109Talk 00:02, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Cleanup Tag

I can't comment on why Zappa.jake placed the cleanup tag on Back to Back life sentences. My bot only updates cleanup tags that have already been placed by another user. Looking at the article, however, it contains many spelling and grammatical errors and is in need of significant improvement and wikification. Feel free to let me (not my bot) know if you have any further questions. Alphachimp talk 17:46, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

Uh..... I just removed your spelling and grammatical errors. Check out this diff. The content is entirely the same. I realize it's not great, but the original article was written even worse. I would welcome a 2nd opinion. Alphachimp talk 18:40, 22 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Admin standards

In response to your admin standards, surely we should not be obligated to use an edit summary on out own page 85% of the time? Please clear this up on my talk page, Dan 17:41, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

Yes, you're right, my standards are a bit vague. I was referring to 85% article edit summary usage, which is what is tallied by Mathbot. Thanks for letting me know :-) —Mets501 (talk) 17:47, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Caroline Island FAC

Daniel:

Thanks for your comments on my FAC for Caroline Island. However, it's difficult for me to address your concerns if you aren't specific with your comments. You mention that some of the metric/imperial conversions are "approximately or inaccurately." The reasons that some of the figures may appear approximate is that the original measurements are approximate. Sources disagree, for instance, on the precise north-south dimension of the island, which I have quoted as "9 km (6 mi)" -- I have done so because then both units have the same degree of precision (significant figures). Likewise, the maximum elevation of the islands above sea level (6 meters) is an approximate figure and does not warrant a precise conversion (which is why I used the round figure of 20 feet rather than 19.7, as you have done.

Furthermore, I believe that your attempts to "correct" my area conversions are also somewhat misguided. 1.04 km^2, for instance, is actually equal to 0.40 mi^2, as can be verified by Google's calculator tools.

I believe that your changes actually decrease the accuracy of the article, and therefore request that you revert them to my original figures. -- Seth Ilys 19:36, 21 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Following you around

I'm not particularly following you around. Some of the articles you've worked on are now on my Watchlist, along with more than 2500 other articls, so when edits are made to them I tend to go in and take a look. Since you tend to edit articles you;ve edited before I often see those articles pop to the top of my watchlist when you edit them, which reminds me to take another look at them. That's all. Gwernol 12:43, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Barnstar

Thank you so much for the barnstar. It was a great joy to receive it, and I am flattered. All the best, Gwernol 14:54, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] username

Hi. To be honest, I don't remember if I tried to get your username. I doubt it, though, because Danielrocks123 is like my email. But I'm not going to lie, I do quite like your name. --דניאל ~ Danielrocks123 talk contribs Count 23:23, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

Could you please at least change the colour scheme and/or symbol in your signature? It's way too similar to mine right now. = P --  Netsnipe  ►  06:43, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

I will surely change my signature, I am going to attempt that now, sorry for the mix-up. Daniel_123  ►  20:47, 5 September 2006 (UTC) (I swear that's the last time you have to read it)

Thank you. --  Netsnipe  ►  20:50, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

I hope this is a satisfactory change -  Daniel_123  ►  20:56, 5 September 2006 (UTC) message me if it isn't and we can talk about it then.

Use whatever you want as your signature. I was only hoping you'd be your own individual! Cheers,  Netsnipe  ►  21:49, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Die page

Hi! Your decision to move the former Die page to Die (disambiguous) was rather inconsiderate. Die can mean lots of things, and it is most logical to have the disambiguation on the page called simply Die. There was even a link to the Death article. Just to let you know, I made a request for the administrators to move the content back as it was before. Liffey 09:34, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your obnoxious comment on my talk page

I think you misread the Judit Polgar talk page. If you read closer, you will see that it was a comment was placed in the article by an anon IP and removed from the Judit Polgar article [1]. I was just mentioning that I moved it to the WP:BJAODN page. Please take the time to look at talk pages closely before assuming bad faith. Themindset 21:10, 6 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Little devil

Heya! The little devil on the left was made with a 3D modeller/renderer/animator package called Cheetah3D, which unfortunately is only available for Mac OS X. It was one of the first things I ever made, but unfortunately I don't really have the time to do that kind of thing anymore, so it was also one of the last. :(

If you're running something other than OS X, you might like to check out Blender, which is much more powerful but also (in my experience) a little harder to use. Aside from that, I'm not really sure what you could try, since Cheetah is one of those nice little applications for which there doesn't seem to be any equivalent. Daveydweeb (chat/patch) 21:06, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, I've always found 3D graphics to be one of those things that can be really hard to get into. The image there only took an hour or two to make with literally zero experience, because it's really just five spheres stuck together - most of the hard work was actually done in Photoshop, making it look slightly less horrible.
Keep at it. Maybe you'll find something you like. :) Daveydweeb (chat/patch) 21:29, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Welcome to Esperanza!

Welcome, Daniel 123, to Esperanza! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is Stressbusters, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Proposals.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact Natalya by email or talk page. Consider introducing yourself at the Esperanza talk page! Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, you may find help at an IRC tutorial. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

[edit] Your userpage

Unfortunately, I don't know if it's possible to change the background colour for your entire page, so I can't really help with your question. On the other hand, Daniel Bryant might be able to help. :) Daveydweeb (chat/patch) 21:05, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

Oh, I noticed your userpage, and it does look might awesome. Congratulations! Have you considered entering the User Page Award content?
By the way, I have the same rendering problem as the user below under Camino. Sorry. :( Daveydweeb (chat/patch) 22:13, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

To answer your second question, it's actually pretty easy to have show/hide sections on the screen. The most basic way to do it is this:

I've placed the above in a table to make it easy to use, but it doesn't need to be in a table of its own - the basic functionality begins with the first "div" tag, and ends with the last. Feel free to lift any code from my own userpage that you want, since I use that kind of thing fairly extensively there. Daveydweeb (chat/patch) 23:37, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

That's an odd problem indeed! I'll see what I can do about it when I get home, but I don't have time to help right now. Sorry! Daveydweeb (chat/patch) 01:09, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
Hi! I've fixed the problems for you, but don't have time to explain exactly how at the moment - I'm getting quite late for school. If you'd like to know, I can explain later today. :) Daveydweeb (chat/patch) 22:04, 11 September 2006 (UTC)

Ok, thanks a lot. You can start whenever you want. And I use Internet Explorer too, so no problem. Again, thanks! --Case Of The Punks 04:40, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Babylon vandalism

Hi - I've popped a warning on the user's talk page. Repeated vandalism by the user will result in a block. Regards, --Oscarthecat 13:59, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Test templates question

Hi Daniel. To answer your question, no you don't have to be an admin to use the test templates. In fact anyone who is reverting vandalism is encouraged to leave one of the standard test messages on the user's talk page. Further details of using these can, of course, be found at WP:VAN. Good luck, Gwernol 14:05, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Templates

Hi - answered your query on my talk page. --Oscarthecat 14:14, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Administrator intervention against vandalism

Hi, Daniel. I noticed you've been reporting vandals to WP:AIV. While anti-vandal efforts by regular users are very important, some of the vandals you've been reporting have only made one act of vandalism and haven't been warned. After you've reverted vandalism, go to his/her user talk page warn the vandal with an appropriate warning template. Usually I start with {{Test1}} or {{Test2}}. When vandals have received a {{Test3}} or {{Test4}} warning, they're ready to be reported on AIV. Regards, -- Steel 23:02, 16 September 2006 (UTC)

You've got nothing to apologise for, it was a minor issue which you're now aware of. One last thing, when you report them, use the IPvandal template. For example: {{IPvandal|ipaddressgoeshere}}. It makes it easier for an admin to block them that way. Have fun. -- Steel 23:09, 16 September 2006 (UTC)
Hi Daniel. I see you're still using the WP:AIV page, but this time as a result of having trouble finding speedy delete tags. This isn't the ideal approach for such problems: could you take a look at WP:DEL and consider using the guidelines there? If any problems, please don't hesitate to ask on my Talk page. --Oscarthecat 19:11, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] speedy deletions

I usually find it helps a lot to leave a note. Always leave the {welcome} first, then the notice. My experience has been that they're less likely to recreate it. Also, if it's an obvious autobio based on the names, and their userpage is a redlink, I'll move it to their user page and tag the article for delete as a {db-rediruser}. See the note I just left at User talk:Jrockstuart. -- Fan-1967 20:03, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Responded

I responded to your query that you placed on my talk page. My response can be found here. Feel free to post any further comments on my talk page, and I'll respond to you as soon as possible. Cheers, Daniel.Bryant 08:46, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Excellent

I am delighted you would like to co-found the anti-vandal group. I have let it go lately because of a lack of interest, but I think we will now be able to get it up and running again. I think this group should be popular because it is slightly different to anything else on Wikipedia, as it aims to preempt attacks on voulnerable pages by watching them, so reverts can be done more speedily! Just get back to me on the area you would like to work on, and I will start on another area. Best wishes, Seivad 10:08, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] RE:Looking at an IP

I guess I'm not sure what incident you are referring to here. Please be more specific. Weatherman90 21:34, 18 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Your editor reviews

Hi! I notice that you recently blanked your first editor review (which was humorously reverted by AntiVandalBot :) ), and requested a new one. There's nothing wrong with that, but I'd like to suggest a better way of doing things: I was considering making these changes myself, but I decided to leave that to you if you think it's worth it.

  • I suggest firstly that you revert back to the very last version of your first review before you blanked it, to leave it in its final state for historical reference. This can be very helpful for future reviewers to see how it went, and generally just makes life easier.
  • On top of that, it'd be helpful to link to that first review in your new one, so people are aware of the comments you received last time (even if there weren't very many of them). If you don't revert back to the final version, you should at least use this link to it.
  • Finally, the names you chose for each review made my brain hurt. I think it'd be best if you move your second review to Wikipedia:Editor review/Daniel 123 (2), and then move your original to Wikipedia:Editor review/Daniel 123 (over-writing the original page). This will make it so much easier to keep track of everything, and is guaranteed to prevent peoples' brains exploding. :)

Anyway, it's nothing really major, but it'd be quite helpful to make those changes. I'll review you again in the morning, when I have the time. Cheers, Daveydweeb (chat/patch) 11:39, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] September Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  2. Since the program in development Appretiaion week is getting lots of good ideas, it now has its own subpage.
  3. The September 2006 Council elections will open for nominations on 18 September 2006. The voting will run from 25 September 2006 until 30 September 2006. If you wish to be a candidate or a member of the elections staff, please list yourself!
  4. The new Esperanza front page design has but put up - many thanks to all who worked on it!
  5. TangoTango has written a script for a bot that will list new members of Esperanza, which will help those who welcome new Esperanzains greatly!

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

[edit] My sig

Well, wow. Where to start. First, from the page you quoted, notice the this is a guideline part, it's not policy. I have no intention of changing my sig untill it is shown to be demonstrably undesireable while editing pages. Second of all, focus on issues that matter. This is an encyclopedia, and that should be it's primary purpose. I notice the majority of your contribs are reversions of vandalism, talkpage and user-spacve edits. Back off the psuedo-policing and start contributing some real content to the encyclopedia, we'll all be better off for it. -Mask 00:34, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

There's nothing wrong with a user who chooses to revert vandalism and perform user-space edits. I thought Daniel's message to you was perfectly civil, but your response was not. Please remember we're all here to make Wikipedia the best it can be. Powers T 15:19, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
Funny, because the next message he gave me told me to go die, and accused the image in the sig of breaking his monitor. Theres nothing wrong with reversions and userspace edits, no, not untill the becaome the majority of a users contribs, then it raises an issue. My response was perfectly civil, I did not insult, nor make fun of the user, I pointed out things that would make him an asset to the wiki. If you feel there was incivility in my message, feel free to raise an RfC and see how far that gets you. -Mask 22:34, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
Daniel was correct in pointing you out, AKMask, but I agree you were civil to the point where you commented about his edits which were not part of it. He was also wrong to tell you to die (he did cross it out) and your image is so small I don't know how it could have made much affect at all. Thanks. --Alex (talk) (review me) 22:40, 22 September 2006 (UTC)
I'm not going to start an RfC over one comment. "Back off the pseudo-policing" is rude and dismissive. It in no way justifies the extreme reaction of Daniel 123, of course, although it may help to remember that he's eleven and probably thought he was being funny. I was too stoned to realise what I was doing, sorry.  Daniel_123  ►  00:42, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
