[edit] Synchronize our watches...

Copied your comments and my reply here.

We really need chat for some of these discussions. This message wait-and-run stuff is just driving me mad. --DanielCD 03:32, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
I know. Especially when I have to hunt for your messages like easter eggs : ) FloNight talk 03:57, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

DanielCD, I left the other discussion where it was. We need to synchronize our watches or something.

I'm going to do some serious work on child sexual offender and child sexual abuse articles and categories. In a week or so, I might start removing some articles without proper references. Hold them in my user subpage and urge other editors to work on them. They don't need to be deleted; they need sources and to be fact checked. I'm going to announce it on the email list and elsewhere. If I announce it first, I hope it won't be seen as WP:POINT. FloNight talk 17:19, 15 February 2006 (UTC)

Well, I'm trying to get away from this subject matter. But it looks like I was right in saying shit sticks. --DanielCD 02:09, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
I get confused too easy to have discussions on two pages. : ) I'm going to stick to answering on my page for now. FloNight talk 02:49, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Societal attitudes towards homosexuality

Just so you know ahead of time, I'm not an admin, that having been said: I don't think that Speedy keep would be the best for this particular AFD. Although the current concensus is for a Keep, and some users suggesting Strong Keep, there haven't been too many calls for a Speedy Keep. Taking into account that it's a controversial topic, and it's getting a few Delete votes from non newusers/sockpupets, I'd suggest letting the AFD run it's course.

But again, I'm not an admin :-P That's my user opinion :-) Cheers! --lightdarkness (talk) 05:37, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

Hey, "Admin" ain't nothin' but a shiny bell. --DanielCD 05:43, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
Hehe, I'm flattered that you value my AFD opinion. I'll read indepth on the nomination tomorrow, and post a comment/vote there, but as for now I must head to sleep. Cheers! --lightdarkness (talk) 05:45, 16 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Nirvana and Dzogchen

I'll check it out. Have you followed the WebEx and Min Zhu arb comm case? It got interesting again, after I thought everything had settled down. We have an old/new editor advocating for the Larvatus, the editor that is being banned. Says that he has been to the courthouse and read the case files. Very strange last minute situation. This person's only previous edit was putting the original unsourced allegations of child rape and corporate cover-up in the article. That was last May, I think. Oh, and Larvatus showed up and made comments the same night. For the first time in weeks. I thought when the arb case was over we could finish the article quickly. Never dull around this place.

I've been thinking about what you wrote earlier. We need to be practical about the situation, I think. (That is one of my life phil.- When in doubt do the practical thing : ) There are conflicting values and ideals in the project. They are impossible to resovle. So by thinking practial you can put these conflicts aside. Defining the practical is usually easier for me. Does any of this make since to you? If not, I sure it is my fault not yours. Sometimes I confuse myself! FloNight talk 05:39, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Create

You sent me to destroy

Yet I create.

Today, I remembered that you suggested the article Neoplatonism and Gnosticism for deletion? Oops! Do you know this topic? I'm going to take the PROD tag off later today, I think. Don't you go and delete it. : ) I saw your name on LoveMonkey's user page. Some kind of editing conflict? Were you warring or mediating? FloNight talk 19:13, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Someone else took the PROD tag off Neoplatonism and Gnosticism I was going to do it later today, anyway. Trouble is in the air. There is conflict starting on the talk page. Spilling over from some that you edited/mediated. Plotinus and others. I can keep order but no expertise in the topic. DanielCD, are you a philosopher? A degree in philosophy? FloNight talk 01:36, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Crime cats

That is the way I came to child sexual offender. Starting in mid Dec., I surveyed all the crime cats. I started with cannibalism! Fraud, rape, murder. I still do some every few days. FloNight talk 01:46, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

Currently, I'm taking people out of (category:bisexual actors) if not properly applied. The category is up for deletion. Could go either way. I voted to delete. Mostly because it has no criteria. I suggested criteria on talk page, and began removing them. FloNight talk 01:56, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Disputes vs vandal wacking

Tonight you're vandal wacking. that's good. Warring is problematic. Misuse of rollback by FCYTravis Being right can still get you in hot water. FloNight talk 04:49, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

We need an organized patrol for sexual and criminal categories. Lot's of weird stuff there. So far, not one (Category:Bisexual actors) article that I've checked has sources to support claim of Bisexuality. Don't want to start fight. What do I do except remove text (if any) to talk page and remove category? FloNight talk 05:01, 22 February 2006 (UTC)
For organized patrol? Stuff that vandals and well-meaning, but misguided, editors put in such articles. Criminal and sexual-related categories get a lot of this weird stuff.

I sent you an email that night (or was it morning). At the time I said I did. I did it through the E-mail this user. Is your account set with your email address? I started to look around for your address online but thought you might be sick of everything Wikipedia. FloNight talk 05:16, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

Way to go Jimbo! I think some people aretrying to bring it back already. DRV had a Brian Peppers listing today. FloNight talk 05:34, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

Dove could be our mascot. Sounds nice, but I'm afraid we'd be shot out of the sky!

Jealous of your knowledge of philosophy. I know sociology, anthropology, communication theory, and behavioral medicine. Lacking in philosophy. Hmmm, wondering where could locate information on philosophy? FloNight talk 21:59, 22 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Answer

Moved here.

No, just go slow. There is already 2 maybe 3 people suggesting big policy changes. Some changes are needed. This place needs stability, though. While in arb comm case, I noticed some patterns to problems. Project needs more structure in the middle where the most active people work. More about that later. FloNight talk 00:25, 23 February 2006 (UTC)
I read my comment above about the dove. I understand why you thought I was against it. No, I wasn't using a literary device to signal my disapproval. Just talking about the dove. FloNight talk 02:09, 23 February 2006 (UTC)
I like the SNAP box. Kind of a fair warning. FloNight talk 02:38, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Cherokee Slang

Dan,

Would you consider changing your vote on Cherokee Slang if I agree to transwiki the content or move it (well some of it anyway -- it's very terse and blunt about what it refers to) to Cherokee Language? Please consider saving it, it's accurate and one of a king content. Waya sahoni 05:08, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

I don't really care. But I do care that you personally attack me. Please don't do it again. Grace Note 02:51, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

I don't think you are my enemy. To the best of my recollection, we've only ever had civil discourse and I was taken aback to have you personally attacking me. I'm more than happy to consider the matter entirely closed. Grace Note 03:10, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Canned caveat

Canned caveat: This message is solely my opinion and not a license for anyone to go off in a rage and insult me. If it offends you to the point that you feel the need to lash out, just ignore it and go on. It's not that important.

I like it. The really snarly people won't pay attention. But might stop some people that shoot-off their mouth for no real reason. About half the time, I think disputes start that way. Then nobody wants to back down. Some of the arguments are about next to nothing. FloNight talk 01:22, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

Cabal?
I've been checking out new pages. Wow, some s-c-a-r-y stuff. Talk:Anti-Ahari No sources. I moved most of the article text to the talk page. And removed an image. FloNight talk 01:43, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

Sometimes I like to read the articles. I had to clean up a mess that one of the parties in WebEx and Min Zhu case made. I had to read about round-tripping, and all the corporations that the SEC is investigation. I haven't kept up with the corporate fraud stuff for months. Kinda killing two birds with one stone.

DanielCD, is reading Chinese one of your many talents? --FloNight 21:11, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Chinese

Drats! I need to research Min Zhu, a Chinese national. He grew up in China, spent time in work camps, then during the 1980's came to US to study. Started Webex in US and is now living in China, again. He is on the list of 200 richest people in China. I bet there's lots of articles written about him in Chinese newspapers.

Have you been to Mammoth Cave? --FloNight 21:26, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

Don't worry about the Chinese stuff. I need to expand the Min Zhu article so it is not overwhelmed by criticism and controversy. I'll figure it out. --FloNight 21:37, 27 February 2006 (UTC)
I noticed that you wrote about it in the shrimp article. (Told'ya I read articles) Mammoth Cave is amazing. It mammoth! Lot's of caves in KY. I grew up near Carter Caves. Big fight in Lexington Ky now about a big cave under the city. In the past, the cave was open to select people for exploration by the owner of the property. A horse farm, duh! Then the farm sold the property to developers. They won't let anyone to have access to it. Or course, it has rare species in it. More important to have access to monitor what development does. The usual fights.
I read a few of your rock and fossil articles. Very interesting stuff. I don't blame you for wanting to write about them instead of pedophiles. : ) --FloNight 22:56, 27 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Sam Eisen

I noticed that you proposed deletion of the Sam eisen, and restored the tag after it was removed. I went ahead and changed it to speedy, since it seems to easily fit the CSD A7 criteria, but now I see you're an admin. So I wanted to notify you, and also ask for my own edification,
A. why you prod'ed it rather than speedy, and

B. why restore the tag after it was removed (which I understood to be not in the spirit of the prod tag)?

I am certainly not questioning your judgement, but merely confused. I apologize if I made a mistake here. Thanks, --Hansnesse 01:32, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

Your redaction is fine. Pretty sure I've done something similar on your talk page. : ) Thank you for working with Jabez. He seems like a decent guy. Tourism in Uzbekistan needs work to make it less pov and use WP style. Have you read the rest of the articles in the tourism categoy. They all are somewhat pov. If we use them as a guide, we don't have as far to go! Green with envy over your new pet computer. FloNight talk 14:26, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Some Happy Knowledge

Oops, sorry about that. When on rc patrol, an unannotated edit by an anonymous editor changing something to "gay" almost automatically triggers the revert function because it's so frequently used as a pejorative by vandalous schoolboys. If I'd looked at the talk page (or perhaps if the editor had used the edit summary box) I would have let it stand. "Merry" is certainly a more accurate translation today. It's too bad that shifting semantics have totally changed the meaning of the original translation, but I agree that if it's widely known by the original translation of the title, that's how it should referred to in the article. --Kbh3rdtalk 17:30, 1 March 2006 (UTC)

Zzzzzz! Falling asleep reading SEC regs and WebEx annual reports. Must go through hundreds of pages of BS to find anything useful. I found what I need to expand, I think. Might turn out to be a decent article after all. FloNight talk 14:41, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Bigfoot

Welcome back. Like the Devil and Daniel Webster. True, the intro is a mess and it must be made clear that Bigfoot is not a proven zoological species, but is tentative, and unproven. But the search goes on for evidence. The extreme LENGTH of this search leads researchers, with or without PhDs, to speculate that there may be a"Plan C" where the beings may be neither hoax, (too many sightings[some made by us- see Wiki article on Experts in Wiki] for that) nor zoological (no body) but instead may be a theoretical space-time creature. This has not yet been stated. It needs to be. Skeptical editors can relax and know that skeptics are correct, there is no zoological Bigfoot nor Yeti. But there is something else. This is being ignored and swept under the rug. Always remember that with no official funding, "mainstream" science has no positive opinion on the topic, and the work goes on by unpaid PhDs and many amateurs, and one paid non-academic.

Now, we, the Six, on the BF Edit Committee in Berkeley, will edit and re edit, and revert until the end of time to get the true and correct word out to readers. We will NOT go away. Editors would be well-advised to work with our suggestions, since we know the literature and most editors never cracked a book. They, except one or two, do not kow squat on the topic, and most are lost in the theoretical quagmire. Most, it seems, are also uneducated. Daniel, welcome back.

Note:The role of expert editors "No original research" does not mean that experts on a specific topic cannot contribute to Wikipedia. On the contrary, Wikipedia welcomes experts. We assume, however, that someone is an expert not only because of their personal and direct knowledge of a topic, but because of their knowledge of published sources on a topic. This policy prohibits expert editors from drawing on their personal and direct knowledge if such knowledge is unverifiable. If an expert editor has published the results of his or her research elsewhere, in a reputable publication, the editor can cite that source while writing in the third person and complying with our NPOV policy. They must cite publications, and may not use their unpublished knowledge as a source of information (which would be impossible to verify).

The skeptic-editors refuse to allow this policy, a Wiki policy.

I am having a slight problem and don't know even if this is the right area to be posting this however, someone registered under the name Hmas or through an unknown IP address have been posting incorrect information about the official site Heavy Metal Appreciation Society at www.HMAS.org. The links have been added and deleted because someone registered under the username or IP address and using a e-mail address from our administrator and have changed it to be offensive to other sites. The real user name is HMAS under a different e-mail address not the webmasters. I don't know how to stop this person from dragging our name through the mud especially when the username is very close. Please help us investigate this problem and if possible delete posts from this user or block them from changing anything, Our site is official and does not want to put any other site down for their work. We are beginning to receive nasty e-mails from other web administrators regarding the changes that were not officially done or where a simple link was origianally posted and description changed to something offensive later. We would be very happy to continue to use wikipedia as a source for our webzine, however, it's not worth the risk if disgruntled people are changing our information and forcing us into a position to possibly close our site. Please get back to me about this problem and if there is anything that can be done. The username HMAS all in caps is the official username. HMAS 21:20, 4 March 2006 (UTC)

It's hard to tell really, just that a link to our site Heavy Metal Appriciation Society www.hmas.org is at the bottom of some link pages then is gone then added again later by someone else and then deleted. I received a message earlier today that alerted me to the problem about our site slandering another website writing abilities through their editor in chief...... the next message was from an unknown person stating.

Personal message: > >"I keep adding your URL to wikipedia.org and the guy from the****tlet.com keeps removing it. Like you can only have one link!!! People are stupid. Please make sure your link stays on the heavy metal page"

(**** to protect the website.)

I attempted to contact this person however, the e-mail is invalid; looks more like it could be a spammer.

When I searched the History of the editing of the Heavy metal pages I came across the user name Hmas and a bunch of times as well as repeated IP addresses, our link as well as others were added and then deleted like 5 minutes later by an IP address then added by one and other links deleted, ours added on an on. I checked out the Hmas user page and it looks like whoever this is has been warned for spamming and unorthodox postings once already as for the IP addresses I'm not sure.

We at HMAS.org would love to have our page listed on wikipedia and DO NOT condone the practice of slander or assaulting rival websites...We get many hits from all over the heavy metal/death metal/etc. sections and think Wikipedia is a valuable resource to us as well as other websites.Josette 03:23, 5 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] It survived

Hazy Moon Zen Center survived Afd, at least for now. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Hazy Moon Zen Center. WP needs better criteria for religous institutions and building. Having a web site is not a particularly good mark of the importance for most everything in the real world.

I've been busy writing articles today. Okay, not articles, mostly Kentucky college stubs. Need to get rid of the red links on the Kentucky page. Going throgh the child sexual offender category AGAIN. This time I'm finding sources for the offenders without sources. Put unref tag on a month ago. Figure the sources aren't going to jump on the articles by themselves.

Pornography addiction is a MESS. Ideologue James Dobson is quoted heavily. Someone that thinks porn is evil, period. Says that porn causes people to View the opposite sex as sex objects. I'm GUESSING that's the reason that someone looks at porn in the first place. So how does porn cause it? Wonder what Dobson thinks of Wikipedia is not censored for children policy?

Enough ranting for now. FloNight 02:12, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Categories and projects

Wikipedia:WikiProject Neopaganism To each is own.

Yesterday, I read somewhere that a category is not part of an article and need not reflect the factual consensus editing of the article. Instead it is a navigational tool. This was suppose to be a statement from an arbitration case finding. Need to think about this more.

The same I guess as making re-direct pages for the many names that a subject of an article may have or the common mispelling of of certain words.

Does this apply to classifying people. If many people think about someone in the context of a rapist and would look for them in that category, should they be there even if they were acquitted of the crime or charges were never brought? Does this fit with WP:BLP. I need to read the finding. FloNight talk15:48, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

Instead it is a navigational tool.
This is what I've been saying all along. Yet it can still create POV. --DanielCD 16:38, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
Then there is no legitamate reason for excluding Graham Rix. He should, should, should (a triple should, now that's moralizing!) be in the category. One of these days, I'm going to work on TRix article; expand the section on his conviction, the controversy about his hiring, and put the child sex offender cat back on. It is well documented in newspaper articles and evidently was debated by publicly by people associated with his team. It's not a priority for me, bottom of the list.
The Andrea Yates case touches on so many issues. (Category:Child killer) seems too simplistic. Looking through the history, someone keeps putting on (category:mass murderer). I thouht we had a category for this topic. Infanticide and Filicide. Yates is listed in the filicide article. It is not very reader friendly term. This biography is weak to be a current topic. I think I'm going to work on it. I'm going to start with good references. Something the article is lacking. FloNight talk 17:46, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
Is Grahram Rix primarily known as a CSO? --DanielCD 17:55, 6 March 2006 (UTC)
To me, he is. : ) I never heard of him before. After his conviction and the widespread coverage, how do you decide? Avid football fans will have one opinion. Child advocacy groups will have a different one. The general public, I don't know. You can't unring the bell. Once the person's name is associated with being a CSO, it sticks. When famous people do something that the public considers unseemly, they have to live with it for life. Forever, Woody Allen will be associated will his relations Soon-Yi Previn, Mia Farrow's adopted daughter. Below is from his article. {The bold emphasis is mine}
In 1992, Allen's personal life became very public, when he left his long-term partner Farrow after she stumbled across an envelope containing nude polaroid photographs Allen had taken of her adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn. Allen has defended his actions, saying that he never lived with her mother Mia Farrow. The revelation had a very negative impact on Allen's reputation and career, and he has not had a considerable large hit film since the revelation. In a 2005 Vanity Fair interview, Allen described their relationship as having a "more paternal feeling." Allen and Soon-Yi married in 1997 and later adopted two daughters, naming both (Bechet Allen and Manzie Tio Allen) after jazz musicians (Sidney Bechet and Manzie Johnson). FloNight 18:27, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

OK you dont have to convince me. I'm just not sure what all that former debate was about now. But I'm not about to get back into it. --DanielCD 18:41, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

Sorry, just thinking outloud. : ) I'll do it somewhere else, if it bothers you. FloNight talk 19:15, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Looking for articles to work on?

Hello, DanielCD. I'm SuggestBot, a Wikipedia bot that helps new members contribute to Wikipedia. You might like to edit these articles I picked for you based on things you've edited in the past. Check it out -- I hope you find it useful. -- SuggestBot 14:32, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Yeah, not the best recommendations for either of you.

FYI I'm looking into SuggestBot's tendency to pick controversial articles. It uses similar editing behavior (if two people both "A" and "B", and person 2 has edited "C", then person 1 might get "C" as a recommendations) when making some suggestions. I think with people who've edited a lot it's picking up on vandalism reversion and that causes it to find lots of other pages that get vandalized to recommend. Sigh. We didn't see this before because we built and tested it mostly on newer editors (I thought it might be a nice tool to draw people into editing).

If you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them. -- ForteTuba 18:05, 8 March 2006 (UTC)

Hi Dannnnniel what's going on! Haven't seen you for a while. just catching up on this-n-that... going back a ways...

  • Yeah SamSpade was only replying because he had been a member of WikiProkect Sex and Sexology (or whatever its called). He's busy with other stuff. (I saw that he went up for admin and got shot down too, dunno what that's about.)
  • Operational definition I never did get to, because... because... so lazy... must.... sleeeeeep. Sorry! Thanks for asking though.
  • I'm finally actually working over a major article, Child sexuality. Man. This is hard work, sheesh. I'm much better at stuff that... isn't hard. But I found out I can get a bunch of stuff on-line through my library and even the Boston Public, woo-hoo! Now I can finish life at home in my spare time! There's just so much material, sheesh. I gotta get my hands on a copy of Rind et at (1983), but I think I have a way to do that too.
  • Actually Joey Q McC has been doing yeoman work in the field on that article and a ton of stuff. Guy is gold.

Carry on buddy! Herostratus 23:51, 8 March 2006 (UTC) P.S. Charmmy Kitty??

[edit] Checkup needed

I tried to revert vandalizm earlier on Shottie as User:212.219.11.30 was caught vandalizing today. But since the last edits were a couple days ago it in retrospect it could have been a different user. Since the article was rather a mess anyway and I am rather unsure about druguser terminology I reverted my revert. But it might need another look at by someone else. (And you came to mind as one of the first admins I ran into when joining wiki) Agathoclea 20:42, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

Thanks, looks like you are getting a big broom onto the article :-) Agathoclea 21:45, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Today's Fun

I'm not sure where to begin. It still seems to give advise or encourage use. Should you prod it?

Also: "Meatpuppet" is a new one for me. What is it? --DanielCD 21:42, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

A Meat puppet is a variation of a sock puppet; a new internet community member account is created by another person at the request of a user solely for the purposes of influencing the community on a given issue or issues. While less overtly deceptive than sock puppetry, the effect of meat puppetry and sock puppetry on the community as a whole may be similar. (From Internet sock puppet). FloNight talk 21:51, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
Yea, now I think I remember reading about that. I've encountered things like this several times, just never applied the term. --DanielCD 21:55, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

Editor AA is not happy with me. I suggested she remove several of her proposed finding in an arb case. Out of the clear blue sky, she accused several parties in an arb case of being sock or meat puppets. I thought it was WP:POINT, since they had accused her of the same weeks ago. Examples she used didn't seem plausible. She thinks I'm taking sides. I'm not. She didn't take my advice so the other parties are accusing her of a bad faith proposed finding and using me to back them up. Of course, what I think doesn't matter. The arb comm will decide. FloNight talk 22:38, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
