This is a photo of american astronomer Daniel Kirkwood (1814-1895), who identified and explained the "Kirkwood Gaps" in the main asteroid belt between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter and who explained that Cassini's Division and Encke's Division in the rings of Saturn are caused by the gravitational effects of Saturn's moons.
