Daniel Meade is a fictional character in the American dramedy series Ugly Betty. He is played by Eric Mabius.
[edit] Background
Daniel is the son of magazine publisher Bradford Meade. His father picked him to become editor-in-chief at MODE, the fashion magazine that Bradford founded, after the mysterious death of Daniel's predecessor, the well-respected Fey Sommers.
Sensing that Daniel will need help because of his inexperience in the fashion industry, Bradford decides to hire a personal assistant to guide him. However, due to his son's habit of womanizing, he knows that the assistant he chooses should be one that his son would never be attracted to - so he chooses Betty Suarez. Bradford figures that by having Betty as an assistant, he is confident that MODE will continue to thrive. Additionally, he knows that Daniel would never sleep with Betty because she has very little sex appeal.
At first, Daniel resents having Betty work for him, but he eventually reconsiders and realizes how valuable an asset Betty would be to the company. Due to the unusual combination of Daniel's business saavy and Betty's wealth of knowledge and ideas, the duo becomes the "darlings" of the fashion industry.
Daniel is also reminded by his father and Wilhelmina about his late brother Alex, who was the editor-in-chief of sister publication Hudson. Daniel hopes that by being in charge of MODE, he can prove to them that he can hold his own without living in the shadow of his late brother.
[edit] Connections
- Betty Suarez - Assistant editor; Her knowledge has helped Daniel succeed in their roles at MODE. The two also seem to depend on each other a lot.
- Fey Sommers - Former Editor-In-Chief; Her 'death' resulted in Daniel being named the successor, a move that in turn screwed Wilhelmina out of that job. He is also drawn into the mystery surrounding Sommers via a series of phone calls warning him to "watch his back" when he is around his father.
- Wilhelmina Slater - Creative Editor at MODE; Daniel's role as the editor-in-chief has also made him and Betty unlikely enemies of the fashion editor. She wants Daniel's job and is determined to make sure that Daniel and Betty never succeed in the world of fashion by any means necessary.
- Bradford Meade - His father and owner of Meade Publications; Despite handing the job to him, Bradford is not so sure that his son can live up to the challenge, but has gained his trust even though the two have shown signs of a rift in their relationship, which is being fueled by Wilhelmina.
- Claire Meade - Daniel's mother; Has been in and out of rehab due to her drinking problem. She has warned Daniel of his womanizing and told him that he will end up going the same route that his father went when he had the affair with Fey.
- Sofia Reyes - Author and Editor-In-Chief of sister publication MYW; Daniel fell head over heels for Sofia, who was bought in by Bradford to launch a new magazine. At first she resisted his temptation because of his womanizing ways but gave in afterwards, even though she had a boyfriend who just asked her to marry him. Her prescence helped curb his womanizing.
- Amanda - Receptionist at MODE; She had a unusual romantic relationship with Daniel, and wanted the assistant editor job that was filled by Betty. However Daniel thinks of Amanda as a one-night stand, thus causing a strain in the relationship because of his constant womanizing, and in the end gave up on going after Daniel but agreed to a working relationship instead.
- Justin Suarez - Betty's nephew; He worships Daniel as if he was a father figure.
