[edit] Biography
Dani was born Daniel Lloyd Davey on July 25th, 1973 in Hertford, England to Susan Janet Moore and Lawrence John Davey, the oldest child of four. Dani has two sisters, Amanda (b. 1975) and Rachel (b. 1979); and a brother, Philip (b. 1982).[1] He grew up in Ipswich, where he attended a private school, and hated to attend on Sundays, even though he always took school very seriously.
His first formed bands consisted of Carnival Fruitcake, the Lemon Grove Kids, PDA, and Feast of Excrement[2]. At the age of eighteen, Filth took up a job at a Chinese restaurant, in order to help form his long-term band, Cradle of Filth. He chose his career in music over an internship at a newspaper [3], although did have a job in Metal Hammer called "Dani's Inferno" for a few years during his time in Cradle. He chose music over writing because he has a fascination with its influence on people.
Cradle took off in 1991, but had no actual proper record deal until 1994, with their first album, The Principle of Evil Made Flesh. Dani has performed on nine Cradle of Filth studio albums since then. Filth is the only remaining member of the band's original line-up, and has been accused by former members of regarding it almost as his own solo project ("Dani and the Filths", according to ex-keyboard player Les "Lecter" Smith).
He is currently married to his long-time girlfriend, Toni (b. November 28), whom he married on October 31, 2005 in Ipswich[4]. The two share one child, Luna Scarlett (b. February 8, 1999). He lives in Suffolk, England and is currently working on writing The Gospel of Filth along with Gavin Baddeley.
[edit] Facts and rumours
- He has three cats named Lilith, Mushka and Rumble (one of which is missing a leg).
- Dani is 5'5" (1.65m) tall.
- Upon forming Cradle of Filth, he changed his name from Daniel to Dani by deed poll, since "Daniel" is Hebrew for "God is Judge".
- His favorite bands are Judas Priest, Emperor, Destruction, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Misfits and Paradise Lost.
- He is renowned for his vocal range. He has the ability to sing very "clean and clearly" but chooses a "dirty screaming" style because it fits better with the sound of Cradle of Filth.
- In 2000 he appeared in the movie Cradle of Fear as The Man, a deranged psychopath hellbent on taking revenge on his father's persecutors.
- In 2003, he supplied the voice of a character called Dominator in an animated movie of the same name.
- He appeared on the Roadrunner United CD in 2005, providing vocals on "Dawn of a Golden Age" in which he depicted Aleister Crowleys book entitled "The Golden Dawn", the phrase 'Soon Childe' is mentioned in both the book and the song.
- He appeared during the final season of Bam Margera's MTV series Viva La Bam, in an episode involving a stolen Hummer and a Cradle of Filth concert in Pennsylvania. The episode featured a portion of Cradle of Filth performing the song "Nemesis" from the album Nymphetamine. Additionally, the song "Her Ghost in the Fog" from the album Midian was used in the background in the episode "Scavenger Hunt", when Bam dropped a piano on Don Vito's "Polizia" car.
- Among his influences are Venom, Iron Maiden, The Sisters of Mercy, Bauhaus, Judas Priest, Emperor, Destruction, Slayer, The Misfits, Paradise Lost and Cathedral.
- One of his favourite films is The Nightmare Before Christmas.
- He once had a skeleton embedded in the floor of his kitchen.
[edit] Quotes
- "I fucking hate arrogance. No, correct that... I fucking hate people. Vast mindless herds of people, usually around Christmas time or rush hour. And TV stereotyping. Urrrgh! Normality, waiting for anything (patience is not one of my virtues), litter, concrete urbanisation, lack of vision, religious strangleholds, bigotry, sponge cake... hate them all."
- "You tend to get rather bored with people or bands not making an effort to look less than ordinary, so we just try and be a little flamboyant, it's just the way we are. We're into this kinda thing."
- (When asked why he has a skeleton in his kitchen) "Well, it's a new kitchen.. so we thought it'd be ironic really, to have a skeleton in there."
- (When asked how he trains his voice) "Continual masturbation. I'm masturbating now. This arm is polystyrene."
- (When asked about his ties to Australia) "Yeah I know a few people, They have been a great help with my music, Elizabeth (Bundaberg QLD) always tells me how great I am and that I change the lives of others. She is the first person to actually be able to put up with me really. Why do I suddenly feel sorry for her?"
- (When asked about what he's going to teach Luna about religion) "I'll let her make up her own mind. I'm not going to force her into anything. I'm not going to force her into anything at all."
- (Concerning Luna) "She doesn't use the 'F' word though. Just like her daddy."
- (When asked what he's going to expose Luna to) "This is the irony of it. She loves Winnie the Pooh. And she loves The Simpsons. And she loves Disney. And Stuart Little. And stuff like that. And she'll dance to it, and that's what you expect from kids. But then at the same time, she'll be dancing around the kitchen to the new Nile album. At the moment she is too young to understand the difference. And that innocence is worth protecting."
- "I actually have two full-size sarcophagi at home. Actually, one's a sarcophagi and the other's a sarcophagirl. And one's my mummy!"
