Dan (Biblical figure)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dan (Hebrew: דָּן, Standard Dan Tiberian Dān; "Judge") is one of the sons of Jacob and Bilhah, Rachel's servant.[1] He was Jacob's fifth son, and Bilhah's first. According to Genesis 30:6, his name comes from Rachel's statement, on the occasion of his birth, "God has judged me ("dananni"), and has also heard my voice, and given me a son: therefore she named him Dan."[2]

Little else is known of Dan, except that he is the patriarch of the Tribe of Dan.
