The words dam and damn have very different meanings, but they are sometimes confused in spelling, particularly by foreigners.

• Dam, a barrier obstructing flowing water, or sometimes a reservoir created by it. When it is a verb, its past form is dammed

• 'Damn!', a classic series of comedy sketches by British comedy duo Fry and Laurie that were a send-up of soap opera Howard's Way.
