Dalry, North Ayrshire

Dalry (Gd: Dail Ruighe) is a small town in the Garnock valley in North Ayrshire, Scotland. It was once an industrial town, served by coal mining, like many such towns in this area of Scotland. Also, like many other such towns it has seen the sharp decline of traditional industry, which has hit the town hard. In addition to coal mining, it was also the home of Dales of Dalry, a prominent local furniture manufacturer, which still exists in the town and now sells, rather than manufactures furniture.

On the edge of the town lies a large chemical plant once operated by Roche, but now run by DSM.

The town lies on the main Ayr-Glasgow railway line and once was a busier junction with trains from Kilmarnock joining the line here. This link to Kilmarnock ceased passenger operations in the early 1970s, with freight traffic also stopping. Shortly afterwards the track was lifted and the station's four platforms were reduced to two. There are 3 rivers in Dalry, the Rye, Caaf and the Garnock.
