[edit] Your VandalProof Application

Dear Dakpowers,

Thank you for applying for VandalProof! (VP). As you may know, VP is a very powerful program, and in fact with the new 1.1 version release it has even more power. As such we must uphold strict protocols before approving a new applicant. Regretfully, I have chosen to decline your application at this time. The reason for this is that unfortunately you fall below our 250 mainspace edit minimum. However please try again perhaps in a week or two. Please note it is nothing personal by any means, and we certainly welcome you to apply again in the not too distant future. Thank you for your interest in VandalProof. - Glen TC (Stollery) 23:42, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

Thank you! I am trying to fill in all of the gaps on the PGA Tour page by making pages for all of the tournaments. There is a Template:Golf tourny template that I add to each one. How do I edit these templates to add the tournaments I'm making? Thanks so much. Dakpowers | Talk 01:25, 20 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] VandalProof 1.2 Now Available

After a lenghty, but much-needed Wikibreak, I'm happy to announce that version 1.2 of VandalProof is now available for download! Beyond fixing some of the most obnoxious bugs, like the persistent crash on start-up that many have experienced, version 1.2 also offers a wide variety of new features, including a stub-sorter, a global user whitelist and blacklist, navigational controls, and greater customization. You can find a full list of the new features here. While I believe this release to be a significant improvement over the last, it's nonetheless nowhere near the end of the line for VandalProof. Thanks to Rob Church, I now have an account on test.wikipedia.org with SysOp rights and have already been hard at work incorporating administrative tools into VandalProof, which I plan to make available in the near future. An example of one such SysOp tool that I'm working on incorporating is my simple history merge tool, which simplifies the process of performing history merges from one article into another. Anyway, if you haven't already, I'd encourage you to download and install version 1.2 and take it out for a test-drive. As always, your suggestions for improvement are always appreciated, and I hope that you will find this new version useful. Happy editing! --AmiDaniel (talk) 02:15, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Welcome to Esperanza!

Welcome, Dakpowers, to Esperanza! As you might know, all the Esperanzians share one important goal: the success of this encyclopedia. Within that, we then attempt to strengthen the community bonds, and be the "approachable" side of the project. All of our ideals are held in the Charter, the governing document of the association.

Now that you are a member you should read the guide to what to do now or you may be interested in some of our programs. A quite important program is the StressUnit, which seeks to support editors who have encountered any stress from their Wikipedia events, and are seeking to leave the project. So far, Esperanza can be credited with the support and retention of several users. We will send you newsletters to keep you up to date. Also, we have a calendar of special events, member birthdays, and other holidays that you can add to and follow.

In addition to these projects, several more missions of Esperanza are in development, and are currently being created at Esperanza/Possibles.

I encourage you to take an active voice in the running of Esperanza. We have a small government system, headed by our Administrator general, Celestianpower, and guided by the Advisory Committee comprised of JoanneB, Freakofnurture and Titoxd. The next set of elections will be in June, and you are more than welcome to take part, by voting or by listing yourself as a candidate.

If you have any other questions, concerns, comments, or general ideas, Esperanzian or otherwise, know that you can always contact Celestianpower by email or talk page or the Esperanza talk page. Alternatively, you could communicate with fellow users via our IRC channel, #wikipedia-esperanza (which is also good for a fun chat or two :). If you're new to IRC, you may find help at an IRC Tutorial. I thank you for joining Esperanza, and look forward to working with you in making Wikipedia a better place to work!

[edit] VandalProof Clash

I think we keep bumping into each other - did we both end up reverting England? :( Perhaps we could collaborate and organise ourselves to get more done? Thanks, please be in touch xD --Xyrael T 16:41, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hey there...

Hey there, Juice. Just stopping by to say thanks for your help fighting vandalism. It's a tiresome battle, but in the end I think it's worth it, knowing you're helping build and protect just about the best resource on the Internet. It has its flaws, yes, but with the attached community, there's nothing better. Hope you enjoy your stay, and thanks again! --Mark Neelstin (Dark Mark) 18:04, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

I don't know why I feel so compelled to contribute and edit this place. I think it's because I use it 100x a day, and feel a need to expand it and make it better. Thanks for the note, it made my hour. It's good to know people are actually watching. :) DakPowers (Talk) 18:06, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Nissan Open

The Nissan Open is in California. 68.190.212.208's edits were good. Just though you might like to know. Bye!!! --M1ss1ontomars2k4 | T | C | @ 01:15, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

I know the tournament is in California, I created the article, though I don't know how the Hawai'i category slipped in there when I made it. I was reverting his version, as he wikified all of the golf courses. I stated in the Talk of the page that these courses are somewhat non-notable, and will probably never have their own page on Wikipedia. :) DakPowers (Talk) 01:32, 22 May 2006 (UTC)
Oh I see. Since his/her/its edits were not simple vandalism, it probably would've been a good idea to put a more descriptive edit summary. --M1ss1ontomars2k4 | T | C | @ 01:35, 22 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Rodney Frelinghuysen article edit regarding ACT-UP

Dakpowers,

If you feel that you can describe the organization 'Aids Coalition To Unleash Power (ACT-UP)' better than, "..the homosexual civil disobediance group..", then I invite you to do so.

Please remember that ACT-UP was founded by and draws its activist membership from the New York City Gay community that was/is concerned about the high price of AZT and government funding of AIDS research. To deny the fundamental identity of ACT-UP's founders and core members would be akin to describing the U.S. Civil War and not mentioning slavery. We need to use some kind of terminology to describe ACT-UP.

Given that you have a bot that immidiately reverts some edits regarding ACT-UP, I must presume that you are highly motivated in making sure that ACT-UP is described in a specific manner.

I suggest that you edit the Rodney Frelinghuysen article yourself or offer explicit phrasing as to how it should be edited.

72.82.183.170 05:34, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

After reviewing the revert in question, I can see now that it is a valid edit. You must understand that we have 100 vandals a minute change a random adjective to "homosexual" (when the person is not) or "poop" or some other nonsense. My advice to you is to register with Wikipedia and get an account. Although Wikipedia is editable by anyone, anonymous IP edits are monitored more vigorously than edits from registered members. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to ask, and please accept my apology for my reversion. DakPowers (Talk) 12:34, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hope

I notice that you replaced the article hope with the contents of Hope & Faith.[2] I assume that it was some kind of mistake.  :)
--Ed (Edgar181) 13:43, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure what happened with hope, I usually check vandalism thoroughly before reverting. I'll start looking closer at content before I revert. Thanks for the heads up! DakPowers (Talk) 13:51, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Brittle star

I was on RCP and I saw "to last version by M1ss1ontomars2k4." You just don't know how creepy it is when you see someone else revert to your revision...from over a month ago. ;) Check the history if you don't know what I mean. --M1ss1ontomars2k4 | T | C | @ 23:23, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

I hadn't even seen the date. I agree with you, though. I guess some vandals think that obscure pages aren't looked over often. :) DakPowers (Talk) 23:25, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Kent Hovind article

Hi Dakpowers!

You have reverted many of my edits on the Kent Hovind article with no explanation. I am confused by this because many of them were simply attempts to clean up the style and grammar of the piece. They could in no way be considered vandalism. Please review the changes you made through the anti-vandalism software. If you still think they are justified, please discuss this on the talkpage. If not, kindly restore them. Best, --JChap 04:14, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

  • I can see you've restored them. Thanks. --JChap 04:16, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Tulsa, Oklahoma article

Mr. Dakpowers,

I'm new to Wikipedia, obviously, but my edits and additions to the Tulsa, Oklahoma article are all made in good faith and not as vandalism, as you call it. Yes, I listed two business links at the end of the article, which seem appropriate. If not, let's at least discuss options for Tulsans who want to use Wikipedia as a good, all-around resource. I am like the Kent Hovind contributor who wondered why his stuff wasn't good enough for you. Thanks. wbsorens 11:30 p.m. Central time, May 25, 2006.

Well, thank you for your contributions. I'd like to say before hand that I have made edits by mistake in the past, but links to a car wash don't seem appropriate as encyclopedic content. Attractions, in my opinion, are acceptable, but it seems like a car wash link is just plain advertisement. You may enter your claim into the discussion page of the article, and if the concensus says that it's appropriate, then they will stay. Please stay as a contributor to Wikipedia, and if you have any questions about the site, please let me know. -- DakPowers (Talk) 04:51, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi. Thanks for reverting vandalism to my user page. —Whouk (talk) 14:00, 26 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] I've admired your golf work/need help in one area

Dak, I've admired your tireless work on the golf pages. Lately, like you, I have been working primarily on golfer pages. I've run into a problem - maybe you can provide me with an idea or two.

My primary resource for developing the PGA Tour win tables in the golfer articles is golfstats from golfonline.com ; however, this only goes back to 1970 on the men's PGA Tour except for Majors. Recently, I've started doing some of the older guys and have not been able to find all their tournament wins. For example, I know that Bob Rosburg won 7 tournaments, but I can only find 5 through research on the web. (The missing two wins were before 1961.) Bobby Nichols won 11, but I can only find 10.

Do you know of any print resource or have another web source because I noticed in your tournament articles some of them go way back.--Hokeman 03:22, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

  • I thought of one other thing I want to mention to you. When you create tournament articles e.g. U.S. Bank Championship in Milwaukee - don't forget to do Redirect pages for the old name of the tournament (in this case Greater Milwaukee Open). I have done a few (see my user page under Articles created - Things). This will help eliminate many redlinks on some of the older golfers pages.--Hokeman 16:52, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
  • I think what I might do is visit a bookstore like Barnes & Noble or Borders and see if they have a golf encyclopedia for sale that lists the older (long defunct) tournaments. Yesterday, I did a page for an even older golfer – Dow Finsterwald – and was only able to find 5 out of his 12 PGA wins on the web.--Hokeman 21:50, 29 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Barney

Just to let you know the bug with VandalProof and "&" is still ongoing. Take a look at Barney where you were tring to revert Barney & Friends. See the IP contributions here they never edited Barney at all. I reported this a few days ago at User talk:AmiDaniel/VP/Bugs#Barney & Barney & Friends. I've added to the report on this. Cheers. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 18:52, 3 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Invitation v. Invitational

Dak, I'm glad you showed me that because I got Invitational right off pgatour.com. One would think that they, if anyone, would know better.--Hokeman 19:15, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

I've seen many others on PGATour.com:
  • The idea for the Colonial National Invitation Golf Tournament was conceived in 1941 after the U.S. Open championship was held here. 1
  • The birth of the Colonial event, however, was delayed five years due to World War II. In the meantime, members planned to emulate the very best, the Masters Tournament, which had begun in 1934. Colonial even adopted part of that tournament's original name, the "Invitation Tournament." 2
  • 1978 Colonial National Invitation. (along with many more than Mr. Trevino, 3
  • Nelson didn't have much of a chance to win the Colonial National Invitation (now the Bank of America Colonial), 4
And on other sites:
  • 1958 Tommy Bolt 282 Colonial National Invitation Tournament 5
See: Google Hits.
Hope this all helps, great work on the golf stuff! Keep up the editing, we'll bring golf back up from being under-covered! :) -- DakPowers (Talk) 19:20, 4 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Barclays Classic

I don't object to you moving Westchester Classic to Barclays Classic, but you have to do it with the "Move" operation, not by cutting-and-pasting the contents of one into the other. When you do that, you lose the article's history, which is a no-no. If you can't do the proper move on your own (which is sometimes the case), get an admin to do it. [edit] You done a great job creating tournament articles

Dak, You've done a terrific job creating pages for PGA Tour, Champions Tour and other events. I'm about to start an ambitious project - a list of defunct PGA tournaments. Basically for two reasons (1) To help lead people to all those wonderful new pages you and others have created (People who wonder, for example, what ever happened to the Bob Hope Desert Classic or the Insurance City Open) (2) So readers will know what happened and why to those tournaments like the Azelea Open, Pensacola Open, Festival 500 Open, and many others which are now in the dust bin of history. I have tried to search the web for information regarding those long since defunct tournaments and found that there is simply not much out there. Can you help me? Do you know of a book or a webpage where I can find out more information?

I have put an experimental template and some ideas on my user page near the bottom. --Hokeman 13:42, 20 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] A short Esperanzial update

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

[edit] Dak, I need your help

I need your help on finding two of seven Champions Tour wins by Don Bies (golfer). I can only find five of them. He turned 50 on December 10, 1987, and golfstats from golfonline.com has all Champions Tour data after 1990 (which shows he had two wins in the 90's), so those two missing wins almost certainly happened in 1988 or 1989. You and Tewapack are my go to guys when I get stumped like this. Thanks.--Hokeman 18:26, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

  • Dak -You're the best. You are awarded the SuperHoke Trophy for coming up with the answers again.--Hokeman 03:48, 13 July 2006 (UTC)
  • Dak, I need your help again - This time with Larry Mowry. I have used amalgamated search engines (like Dogpile & AOL) but there is very little to be found on him. Thanks. --Hokeman 02:52, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

Very happy birthday. --Bhadani 11:34, 30 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Dak, I need your help again

I can only find 5 of the 7 PGA Tour wins for Bert Yancey, and 3 of the 4 PGA Tour wins for Homero Blancas. In both cases, the missing wins were before 1970. Also, I am having trouble completing the PGA Tour wins and Champions Tour wins templates for Larry Mowry. Mowry's missing PGA Tour wins were in the 1960s and his missing Senior Tour wins were in the 1980s. I noticed you said before that pgatour.com was your resource for finding out this information. Very often, I have gone to an individual golfers intro page (Profile) or bio page (Media Guide) and it will be blank. This is particularly the case with older guys like Blancas, Mowry and Yancey. You must have a way of penetrating their database and obtaining information that I don't know about. Please enlighten me on how to do it.

Tewapack found stuff on Yancey, I found stuff on Mowry, but I still need Homero Blancas' missing win (it was in the 1960s) and to learn how to access PGATOUR.COM data base--Hokeman 14:01, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] August Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

[edit] Seeking your input on new golf-related project

Dak, I looked over your contributions page and noticed that you have been taking a break from Wikipedia since around the end of July, a couple edits in September notwithstanding. I am about to start a major project for golfers this fall - A list of Defunct Tournaments - see my User page near the bottom for more detail. Since you've done extensive work on tournaments, I'd like your input.--Hokeman 02:54, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] September Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  2. Since the program in development Appretiaion week is getting lots of good ideas, it now has its own subpage.

[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:ChryslerGreensboro.gif

Thanks for uploading Image:ChryslerGreensboro.gif. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}. If you have not already done so, please also include the source of the image. In many cases this will be the website where you found it.

Please specify the copyright information and source on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me, or ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Zisoc 01:19, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] November Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.
