The novel is about a 15-year-old girl named D.J. Schwenk, who lives on a farm in Red Bend, Wisconsin. During the summer, she is pressured into training a football player by the name of Brian Nelson, who is a substitute quarterback for a rival football team. Eventually, they become friends, and that summer, DJ will learn a lot about the people in her life.
