Dachau Blues

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Dachau Blues" is the third track off of Captain Beefheart's third album, Trout Mask Replica. The song's early lyrics deal with the Holocaust, as Beefheart (also known as Don Van Vliet) moans "Dachau Blues, those poor Jews...". Towards the end of the song, he addresses the need to prevent future violence and World War III. Dachau, located in Germany, was one of the many concentration camps that Adolf Hitler commissioned for the brutal treatment of Jews. "Dachau Blues" features a clarinet solo by The Mascara Snake, a cousin of Vliet. Tagged at the end of the song is monologue, probably by bassist Rockette Morton, telling the story of an incident involving rats. The song is possibly referenced on Blue Öyster Cult's album, Spectres, when the line "I ain't gonna catch them Dachau Blues" is chanted in "R.U. Ready 2 Rock"[citation needed].
