This doesnt really sound like its from an encyclopedia, more like an informal story. Anyone agree?

Yeah it sounds like it was writen from the perspective of an aquaintence.

It says he graduated from high school in 1992. He would've been 14 that year. This is also the year it says he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's. Doesn't sound right.
