D'Anjou
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The poire d'Anjou (known to English speakers simply as the D'Anjou pear, or just D'Anjou) is a short-necked cultivar of pear. As the name "d'Anjou" suggests, it originated in Anjou,France. There are two main varieties of D'Anjou:
- Green Anjou has a pale green skin that doesn't change color as the pear ripens.
- Red Anjou has a deep red skin that darkens as it ripens.
D'Anjou pears are less expensive than other pear varieties, but are tart and have a lower sweetness level.
[edit] As A Culinary Ingredient
D'Anjour pears are often used in crafting various dishes. They are somewhat famous for the fact that the "Juicy Pear" Jelly Belly bean flavor is made using their purée.
