Díotóir

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Díotóir was a contestant on Robot Wars from Series 3-5. It was created by Peter Redmond, Cairon "Zulu" Byrne and Joe Gavin. The team are from Dublin, Ireland. They also entered as Nemesis in Series 1 & 2 and Ulysses and Stánosclóir in Series 1 - 3 of Technogames.

Diotoir, and its predecessor Nemesis, was well known for being the only robot to have a fabric covering over their armor, referred to as Diotoir's "fur", instead of the usual paint. The number of fire hazards in the Robot Wars arena meant the robot invariably was set alight in battle. This did not do much damage to the robot itself, but was an impressive spectacle that made Diotoir popular.

Their main weapon was a hydraulically cocked, spring-powered flipping arm. This weapon, however, lacked the power of the conventional CO2 powered pneumatic flippers, leading in part to Diótóir's relatively unsuccessful run in Robot Wars.

[edit] Series 3

In Series 3, Diotior was insisted by customs to take the robot apart "because they had no idea what on Earth they were faced with" said Philippa Forrester. Customs does something similar in Series 4

[edit] Round 1 vs. Sting 2

Sting II ripped off a bit of Diotoir's fur. Both robots were very slow, and Diotoir lifted Sting II. Diotoir then pushed Sting II into the arena wall and into the pit.

[edit] Round 2 vs. Steel Avenger

After a very slow start Diotoir got under the Steel Avenger, and The Steel Avenger drove into Dead Metal. The Steel Avenger knocked one of Diotoir's eyes off, before it was flipped by Diotoir. At the end Sergeant Bash used his flamethrower and set Diotoir's fur on fire.

[edit] Round 3 vs. Firestorm

Firestorm pushed in but could not flip Diotoir at first. It drove in again and flipped Diotoir before pushing it over the flame pit. Dead Metal drove too close to the flames and caught fire.

[edit] Series 4

Arriving in the UK for filming, Diotoir had been dismantled in customs, they had come in 6kg overweight and had to lose their top armor, and the chain controlling their weapon broke. Without any time to fix these problems, they sent their robot, now woefully inadequate and with a sleep deprived team (after rebuilding the robot after customs) into the arena for its first fight.

[edit] Round 1 vs. Ming 2 vs. Bolt From The Blue

Ming 2 got under Diotoir and flipped it, before Bolt from the Blue pushed Diotoir over the flame pit. The robots avoided each other while Diotoir caught fire.

[edit] Series 5

[edit] Round 1 vs. Dome

One of the quickest fights of series 5 involved Diotoir on the receiving end. But this time the quickest fight of the heat featured Diotoir the winner. The scoop easily tipped Dome over and rolled it down the pit.

[edit] Round 2 vs. Tornado

In a shocking upset, Diotoir managed to maneuver Tornado into the pit to get a surprise victory.

[edit] Round 3 vs. Spawn Again

Yet another quick fight. Spawn flipped Diotoir over, Diotoir couldn't get back and was out. Of course, it left in the normal fire ball.

[edit] Noteworthy Battles

[edit] vs. Sting 2

Diótóir's first battle. Also one of the few times it did not go up in flames.

[edit] vs. Ming 2 vs. Bolt From The Blue

Described by the Robot Wars Ultimate Guide as the team's worst moment ever. Upon its arrival in the UK, Diótóir was dismantled by customs, leading to a reconstruction that cost the team valuable sleep time. Upon arrival to filming, the robot came in overweight, and the top armor had to be removed. The weapon then malfunctioned, but the team had no time to repair it. Without a weapon or armor, Diótóir was quickly dispatched by Ming 2.

[edit] vs. Tornado

Noteworthy as a major upset as Diótóir managed to maneuver Tornado into the pit for a surprise victory.
