Cyril Mathew
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cyril Mathew is a Sri Lankan politician.
Mathew belonged to the United National Party and was a minister in the cabinet of President J.R. Jayewardene in the 1970s and 1980s. Mathew was the author of the book Sinhalese! Rise to Protect Buddhism, which was accused of racism against Sri Lanka's Tamil community. He also issued a pamphlet Who is the Tiger.
Mathew is best remembered for his alleged role organizing and executing the Black July pogrom against the minority Sri Lankan Tamils in July of 1983. He represented the Kelaniya electorate for the UNP and belonged to a lower Sinhalese caste of Wahampura unlike most ruling Sinhalese politicians. Prior to the events of July 24, 1983, he was known for his hard-line position against Tamil political aspirations.
