[edit] Awards and recognition

For the 1981-82 school year, Cynwyd Elementary School was recognized with the Blue Ribbon Award from the United States Department of Education, the highest honor that an American school can achieve.[3]

[edit] History

Cynwyd Elementary School opened on January 4, 1915 with 189 students entered school, in a building still under construction, using a design by the architectural firm of Savery, Scheetz and Savery. The original building had eight classrooms, with one for each grade and a combined classroom for seventh and eighth grades.

A cafeteria and auditorium/gymnasium and additional classrooms were added in 1920, which more than doubled the size of the school.

A classroom/library addition was constructed in 1967. The library wing was demolished and rebuilt in 1998, as part of an extensive renovation project. A new addition includes a spacious atrium which overlooks the Academy Building.[4]
