Cyhiraeth

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Welsh folklore, Cyhiraeth was an ominous figure who warned of impending death (compare the banshee and Cailleach). She was often depicted washing her hands at a crossroads or stream.[1]

The name is sometimes spelled Cyhraeth, and is pronounced /kəˈhirɑɨθ/ or something like "kuh-HEE-ryth". It is apparently related to the Welsh word hiraeth, or 'longing'.
