The story centers on a young boy, Nino, and his family dog, Rex, who takes on a significant role in Nino’s life after the boy loses his father to cancer. During a stroll in the park with Nino and his mother, Rex manages to save the life of the eccentric inventor and dotcom wiz, Alex (played by Judd Nelson.) Rex is badly injured during his act of heroism and Alex, as a gesture of gratitude, takes the dog back to his bionics lab to rebuild him. After the procedure, Rex can bench press 550 lbs., see in infrared vision, and run at 70 mph. He can smell jelly beans at a very long distance, and he can knock barrels down flights of stairs with the greatest of ease. Through cutting edge gadgetry, Rex is imbued with super powers and becomes the target of villains determined to possess the new technology at any cost. However, they learn the Rex is a formidable adversary. In fact, after Rex vanquishes these foes, they are arrested and imprisoned. Rex knocks barrels down on the bailiff at the local jail, and hangs the villains with there shoelaces, making it appear as if they had committed suicide. This was the only way that Rex could be confident they would never escape prison, and seek retribution by harming Nino.

[edit] Controversy

Some have argued that the last scene in this movie is both unnecessary and innapropriate. In this scene, Rex offers to teach Nino how get chicks after witnessing Nino's failed pick up attempts. Rex leads Nino to his girlfriend's house and Nino watches as Rex is taking her doggy style while flexing his bicep like he does on the cover of the film. Then, to the audience's surprise, Rex's mechanical beenyess squirts motor oil in his girlfriend's face, much to her dislike. Frankly, this is quite innapropriate for a PG movie.
