Cutting (music)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cutting is a disc jockey technique used to loop records and is popular in hip hop music. Originated by DJ Grandmaster Flash the technique consists of "manually queueing up duplicate copies of the same record in order to play the same passage, cutting back and forth between them." (Ankeny) This is necessary to isolate and extend breaks into breakbeats.

The term "cutting" is also sometimes used by scratch DJs to refer to the release scratch, where a sound effect is played on beat by releasing the record at the beginning of the sound.

Also a term from the days of vinyl records. To "cut a record" was to record a record because the grooves in the orginial acetate were physically cut according to the music.
