Please do not add commercial links or links to your own private websites to Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising or a mere collection of external links. You are, however, encouraged to add content instead of links to the encyclopedia. If you feel the link should be added to the article, then please discuss it on the article's talk page rather than re-adding it. See the welcome page to learn more about Wikipedia. Thank you. As stated in the messages above, we encourage you to add content to articles versus links to your own site. While you state that the site is "free," I notice that you do encourage donations. Wikipedia is not a vehicle to promote a personal site for any reason. Thanks, OhNoitsJamie Talk 18:09, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 2nd reply

As noted on my talk page, I prefer to communicate via talk pages unless there is a good reason not to do so (confidential matters, etc.) If you'd like to donate your material to the public domain, I'd suggest you check out Wikibooks. Oh, and to answer your other questions; I've been writing Java code since 1997 and I've taught university classes. My objection wasn't to the content, but rather to the sense I got that you were attempting to use Wikipedia to drive traffic to a personal site. Cheers, OhNoitsJamie Talk 18:26, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

I was suggesting that you merge your content with the Java content that is already in progress at Wikibooks. If you feel that your site is superior to some other links here, feel free to propose it's inclusion on the talk page for the Java article. I'll go with the consensus opinion on it. [edit] Emails

I don't really appreciate the tone in your emails. I'm not addressing anything else unless it's posted in talk pages. OhNoitsJamie Talk 18:41, 1 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] External links

Please stop adding inappropriate external links to Wikipedia. It is considered spamming, and Wikipedia is not a vehicle for advertising. Thanks. -- Solipsist 14:32, 6 October 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your email - and I note your concern about the somewhat haphazard application of Wikipedia's policies. You are right, in fact just about everything to do with Wikipedia is somewhat haphazard. Its remarkable that it works at all. One of my favourite aphorisms that you might see around here, is;
The trouble with Wikipedia is that it only works in practice; it doesn't work in theory.
Rather too many Wikipedia editors turn a blind eye to removing commercial links and other links that are against policy. Personally I tend to remove them when I see them added to articles on my watchlist (I've got a rather large watchlist) and occaisionally go through pruning the links in an article when I find some particularly egregious examples. I invite you to join Wikipedia:WikiProject Spam to help in removing inappropriate external links - anyone can do it, it doesn't require an administrator. They also have some templates that can be used to flag articles that look like they might have a lot of spam links. That may (or may not) attract the attention of other editors who will help to clean up the problem. - Solipsist 19:43, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
