• Al Ahly won their fifth African Champions League title equalizing the African record of Al-Zamalek. Al Ahly snatched away a fairytale dream from their Tunisian hosts Club Sportif Sfaxien with a last-gasp goal that ensured a 2-1 aggregate triumph for the defending champions. Mohamed Abo Treika, confirming his status as the best player at this year's competition, hit a full volley from the edge of the area into the bottom right-hand corner of Sfaxien's goal to claim the cup again for the Egyptian giants. • The Zambian government has announced that microbial analysis of samples taken from Chavuma and Zambezi provinces have confirmed the presence of oil and gas deposits. President Levy Mwanawasa has appointed a committee under Mines Minister Kalombo Mwansa to develop policies on oil. Aljazeera.net

• The government of Gabon's El Hadj Omar Bongo Ondimba is under pressure following revelations about plans to sell the islet Mbiane to neighbouring Equatorial Guinea.[1] The two nations' dispute about oil-rich territories in the Gulf of Guinea was hoped to be resolved this week during a meeting chaired by Kofi Annan, which was cancelled on short notice by Omar Bongo. The Gabonese newspaper L'Echo du Nord was shut down after reporting about apparent plans to sell the islet as Omar Bongo, "...for the first time since he came to power in 1967, sees his position threatened by a popular movement, which could soon force him to dismiss his government." • The Zimbabwe African National Union - Patriotic Front has retained two seats in byelections to the House of Assembly of Zimbabwe, in the constituencies of Chikomba and Rushinga.

• France issues arrest warrants for two Djibouti officials that interfered with investigations after the assassination of a French judge there. Djibouti doesn't recognize the warrants.(BBC)

• In Nigeria, the collapse of a dam wall kills forty people in Gusau, Zamfara state. (ABC Australia)

• The remains of Franco-Italian explorer Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza are exhumed in Algiers for re-interment in Brazzaville.[3]

• FNL (National Liberation Forces) signs a cease-fire agreement with the Burundi govenrmnent. The last remaining Hutu group started negotiations last year after the election of Hutu leader Pierre Nkurunziza.BBC

• Government forces and United Front for Democratic Change (FUC) rebels clash in Chad at Aram Kolle, near Biltine. From the rebels declarations, this is part of an ample movement of FUC forces pointing to the capital N'Djamena, that already last April was attacked by the FUC.[4]

• As Chadian President Idriss Déby is sworn into his third term in office; he hugs Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, who only a few days ago was overseeing a campaign to overthrow the second Déby administration. (BBC)(BBC)
