Curly Putnam

Born on a mountain named for his family in Princeton, Alabama, Curly Putman has placed the family name in even more auspicious places.
As one of the most successful Nashville songwriters, Putman struggled for years before starting at the top. Working as a shoe salesman, he supported his family while trying to break into the music industry. He finally signed to write songs for Tree Publishing Company. His first major recording, “Green, Green Grass of Home,” has been recorded by over 400 artists in every major language in the world. The most successful version was recorded by Tom Jones and sold between 10 and 12 million copies worldwide.
He has followed that initial success with many more. His song “He Stopped Loving Her Today” was named the “Song of the Year” twice by the Country Music Association. He has earned a total of 36 BMI awards for other songs like “My Elusive Dreams,” “D-I-V-O-R-C-E,” “It Don’t Feel Like Sinnin’ To Me” and “It’s A Cheatin’ Situation.”
He has been selected as a member of the Nashville Songwriters Association International Songwriter Hall of Fame, and has had a ball field in his hometown of Princeton named after him.
