Cupline
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cupline or Cups is a fast paced rhythmic party game played with plastic cups.
Requirements:
- At least one player (However, four or more is best)
- As many plastic cups as there are players (cups should be sturdy, and roughly five inches tall)
- A flat table that all players can sit around while being able to easily reach the player to their right
[edit] How to play:
Cupline is...hard to learn, but easy to master. It only takes rhythm and agility to play. Try reading this yourself, and then personally teaching it to other players, as it's difficult to learn from the text.
To start, have everyone sit (or stand, depending on the size of the table) around the table. Each player should have a face-down (if the cup had water in it, it would spill) plastic cup in front of them. The rhythm below is played in unison, and on-beat.
- Clap, clap (Clap your hands together twice)
- Tap, tap, tap (Tap the table or the top of the cup three times, right hand first, then left, then right again)
- Clap (Clap your hands together once)
- Grab (Grab the top of the cup (it's facing up, and is actually the bottom) and hit it back down on the table(if the cup isn't directly in front of you, move it over in this step))
- Pause (Pause the rhythm for one beat)
- Clap
- Grab (Grab the left side of the cup with your right hand, so that your wrist twists and your elbow goes up)
- Hit, flip it over (turn the cup so that it's elevated with the rim facing up, and hit the rim (top) with your left palm, 8. thus compressing air and adding a new sound to the rhythm. Then hit the button of the cup against the table)
- Hit (grab the bottom of the cup with your left hand and hit the table with your palm)
- Pass! (Cross your left arm over your right (the cup is in your left hand), and slam it down in front of the person to your right face down, so that they can grab follow suit in what you just did.)
- Pause (Pause, and then start over with step one, using the new cup in front of you)
Keep passing cups so that they go in a circle, and everyone is continuously playing. It will naturally get faster and faster.
[edit] Variations
Cupline isn't always played exactly like that. There are several variations, like number of claps, adding hits, and leaving out steps, etc. Here are some ideas for a more varied game.
- The rock 'n' roll intro: One person says "A one, and a two, and a" and then everyone says in unison, "one, two, three four!", slamming their cup face down on each number, or beat. Thus setting the starting tempo, and giving it a classic rock 'n' roll feel.
- The solo: Try letting one person improvise a solo while the other players discontinue the passing of cups, and playing by just slamming the cup down in front of them. As if there was only one person
