Cuotl

The Cuotl (originating from the Nahuatl coatl, meaning "snake") are one of three main civilizations in the 2006 PC real-time strategy game, Rise of Nations: Rise of Legends. They are an alien civilization inspired by the ancient Mayan civilization and the ancient astronaut theory from Chariots of the Gods. The Cuotl were originally a race of technologically advanced extraterrestrial astronauts whose spaceship crash-landed in a rainforest on Aio. Possessing highly advanced technology (indistinguishable from magic), the Cuotl disguised themselves as four Gods and made followers out of the indigenous population of the surrounding rainforests.

The Cuotl units and buildings seemed to have been influenced by a mix of ancient Mesoamerican and alien designs. The Cuotl have no need for the other races' wealth resource, instead utilizing an equivalent resource called Energy which is generated from one of their unique districts, the Reactor. The Cuotl have very strong units and abilities (like their national power, Star Bolt, which lets the player see enemy territory and damage any visible units in the process) but these require plenty of energy to use and have a long cooldown.

They are arguably the most unique race out of the three. Neutral sites are not bought over by money, but forcibly subjugated under Cuotl control, which costs the player Timonium. Instead of using Caravans to trade for wealth, Cuotl cities have a Reactor District which provides energy. They also have no means of inflicting attrition damage, and can only deal attrition damage either by summoning the hero Czin or by building a Holy District, which provides a small area around the City where heavy attrition damage is dealt.

The Cuotl special abilities are also very different. Nearly all of their units gain Personal Shields, which absorb damage when activated, and Personal Cloaks, which can make them briefly invisible, but activating these abilities draws from the energy supply. Additionally, the Cuotl heroes gain experience by using their abilities, and they gain new abilities immediately, without needing any to be researched. Their abilities become more powerful as they gain levels.

The Cuotl's National Power is Star Bolt, which can be cast on any spot on the map even if the location has not been explored yet. Star Bolt creates a fiery circle which damages nearby units with blinding flares of energy. The bolt can even be controlled and moved around to reveal more territory.

Zeal: Zeal increases the attack power of all your Cuotl units and provides free Sentinel units. It also increases the production rate of new Sentinels. Image:Zeal.jpg
Judgement: Judgement provides you with a constant income of Timonium, and a one-shot Timonium bonus every level after the first. Subjugating neutral sites also cost less and buildings and units take less damage after subjugation. Another added effect is that it activates the shields on all Cuotl units and buildings and further increases the health of Cuotl heroes. Image:Judgement.jpg

The Reactor District replaces the economic district and produces energy for the Cuotl.

  • Holy District

The Holy District is the unique district for the Cuotl. It deals 'attrition' damage to enemies in a small radius around it, and comes with a free Holy Ark, which serves as protection from enemy territorial attrition damage. The Holy District also allows Cuotl units to heal in friendly territory.

[edit] Heroes

Unlike other heroes, the Cuotl "gods" gain experience simply by using their abilities. Their abilities require energy to activate, so this is similar to how the other races upgrade their heroes' new abilities with wealth. Also, none of the Cuotl heroes' abilities needs to be researched; they become available as soon as a city of the appropriate level is controlled.

Xil, the Sun God can use powerful beam attacks that harness the power of the sun to destroy enemies. Xil improves Sun Cannons, Sun Jaguars, Sun Idols. He also decreases cooldown time for Starbolt.

Abilities

  • Blinding Armor - Targeted friendly units gain strong defenses and glow more brightly until they blind the enemy.
  • Mirror Image - Creates several weaker duplicates of Xil.
  • Burning Beams - Creates light rays from the sky that burn any enemy they touch.
  • Sun Blast - Enhances Xil's normal attack to devastating levels.

Czin, the God of Death appears as a multi-legged mass with whip-like arms. He has special powers that enable him to paralyze and weaken the enemy's health. Czin causes attrition damage to enemies in your territory. He enhances Death Snakes and Death Spheres.

Abilities

  • Plague - Does damage over time to target unit and spreads damage to other units that come in contact.
  • Soul Burn - Stuns enemies and disables their special abilities.
  • Death Grip - Allows Czin to freeze nearby enemies and feed off their health.
  • Death Gate - Creates a giant ball of swirling darkness that drags units in and damages them.

Shok, the Goddess of Storms appears as a giant bird that can control the weather. She can shoot lightning out of her wings and summon huge storms which disrupt the enemy over a wide area. Shok boosts building shields and increases speed for all flying units.

Abilities

  • Thunder Clap - Stuns ground units, and removes spell effects/augmentations.
  • Lightning Blast - Creates a damaging electrical attack.
  • Hurricane - Covers the entire map, damaging and paralyzing enemy air units.
  • Lightning Jump - Teleports Shok and a select number of troops anywhere on the map.

[edit] Master Unit: City of Vengeance

The Cuotl's ultimate display of technology and destruction, the City of Vengeance is a floating monolithic structure of massive proportions. Capable of transporting entire Cuotl armies within its walls, the City can quickly bring the battle to anywhere on the map. The negative singularity at its core launches deadly bolts of lightning at nearby enemies, and it can fire a beam of solar energy at buildings, reducing them to rubble in seconds. Like other Cuotl heroes and units, it can use Energy to execute its special abilities, which include being able to instantly and fully heal itself, send out a Gravity Wave to knock back enemies, and fire a Disruptor beam capable of instantly destroying most buildings. When upgraded into a Great City of Vengeance, its attack power and transport capacity is increased, as well as its armor.
