Kno Deacon The Villain |
CunninLynguists is a southern hip hop duo composed of DJ Kno and rapper Deacon the Villain. Rapper Mr. SOS was once a part of the group, he has since departed from the group, although he maintains close ties. They replaced Mr. SOS with Natti on A Piece of Strange.
Although the group has attracted some attention among the mainstream hip hop community - Kno has been called "The best loop-miner east of the Mississippi" and "Today's best beat-maker" - the group hasn't achieved mainstream status. They are highly respected among their fans, however, for deep, personal lyrics (such as "Mic like a Memory"), a generally uplifting message, and intoxicating beats.
The name CunninLynguists is a misspelled pun on cunnilingus, the standard version of which is "cunning linguists".
[edit] Parody
Cunninlynguists are given to making parodies:
- Falling Down, from SouthernUnderground, pokes fun at a movie of the same name. It's the story of a young man working at a fast food chain, whose girlfriend declines his proposal just before he's fired, and then goes crazy and shoots the mall up.
- Fukinwichu, from Will Rap For Food, makes fun of gangsta rappers who talk themselves up on their own records. Instead of bragging about how tough they are, Deacon and Kno rap about stupid things they do. ( "... I'll kidnap an Amish family and lock 'em inside Circuit City ..." )
- The Fellationelles, from Sloppy Seconds Vol. 1, is a parody of the Cunninlynguists name, and the practice of "biting" or copying someone else's style. Kno pretends to do a lousy job of producing a female rap group called The Fellationelles, showing Deacon tracks he's produced for them. After listening, Deacon says "That's Nas," and Kno responds "No, no, dawg, that's me in the background - I sampled me saying all the same stuff Nas says." The song is more of a skit - three stories like this.
