A cumulonimbus incus (Latin incus, "anvil") is a cumulonimbus cloud which has reached the level of stratospheric stability and has formed the characteristic anvil-top shape. If the atmospheric updraft is strong enough, it can bypass the stratospheric stability and become a pileus.
