The Cumberland Line is a cross-suburban service in the Sydney metropolitan rail network known as CityRail. It operates from Campbelltown to Blacktown via Parramatta railway station, Sydney and was opened in the late 1990s. It is one of two suburban lines within the Sydney metropolitan area which does not go to Central Station or the City Circle (the other is the Carlingford Line). The line takes its name from the Cumberland county which covers most of metropolitan Sydney.

[edit] Description of route

Physically, the line consists of the Western Line from Blacktown station to Harris Park, the "Old Main South" (known as the South Line) between Merrylands and Cabramatta, and the Main South Line between Cabramatta and Campbelltown. The "Y Link" is a section of track between Harris Park and Merrylands which opened in 1996, allowing services to operate directly between these two stations without requiring passengers to make a change of train at Granville.

[edit] Services

Originally a regular half-hourly service in both directions, its importance has been receded in subsequent timetables, to the point where it became a weekday peak hour-only service. In the latest CityRail timetable starting on September 4, 2005, the Cumberland Line only runs one-way in each peak: two services run in the morning peak from Campbelltown to Blacktown (the first of which extends past Blacktown to Marayong and Quakers Hill, via the Western Line's Richmond branch), with three services returning from Blacktown to Campbelltown in the evening. On 16th December 2006 it was announced that a half houly service will resume on the line in the near future with the introduction of new outer suburban trains, freeing up three suburban trains to operate the service.
