From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cumbaya is part of Quito Metropolitan Distict, located on the edge of Tumbaco valley just east of the capital at about 2200 m (7217 ft) above sea level, is located on the north west area of Ilaló volcano.
Because it is at a lower altitude than Quito, it has a warmer climate (about 2 to 5 degrees Celsius higher).
Well known, because of their neighborhoods, this area is inhabited by middle-upper class people. It is the home of the San Francisco de Quito University (Universidad San Francisco de Quito or USFQ), one of the most prestigious private universities in Ecuador (About USFQ in English). Highly prestiged private high schools are also located in this area such as "Colegio Alemán", "Colegio Internacional SEK los valles",CMSFQ (Colegio Menor San Francisco de Quito) and others.
Because of Quito's fast-growing expansion during the last 35 years, Cumbayá is now part of Quito's metropolitan area. A newly constructed tunnel (Túnel Oswaldo Guayasamín) of about 1.5 km long (almost a mile, the largest in Ecuador) connects the northern part of Quito with Cumbayá, as well as other roads (like Simón Bolívar Avenue)and "los conquistadores" road actually called vía Guápulo.
In 2004, the Chaquiñán rail trail was opened from Cumbayá 20km to the northeast ending in the village of Puembo. [1]
