Category talk:Culture by country

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'm not sure I understand this category. Does this mean that if a culture doesn't have a nation-state, it doesn't get included at this level? What happens to, for example, Catalan culture, Gypsy culture, Jewish culture (most of which is an entirely other matter than Israeli culture), the cultures of various Native American nations? -- Jmabel 01:24, Aug 20, 2004 (UTC)

I don't think the culture of non-countries should be included here, though perhaps this category should be moved to "culture by nation" so that other subjects can be included. Tuf-Kat 01:53, Sep 30, 2004 (UTC)
I'd put the Catalan and Basque culture categories in the Spain category (and probably also France), eventhough that is controversial to some. Tamil culture is currently part of the Indian country culture. Gypsy/Roma culture (and Kurdish culture, ...) could be put under a new "Culture by ethnicity" category under the "ethicity" category. Category:Roma_culture is currently categorized under "ethnicity->Roma". Jewish culture can be in "Culture of Isreal" and perhaps "Category:Culture by Religion". The various native american/asian cultures are best put under the respective country culture categories IMO. Walden 12:18, 2004 Sep 30 (UTC)
Part of my point is that most Jewish culture is emphatically not the culture of Israel. Similarly, is the culture of ethnic Hungarians in Transylvania 100 years ago now retroactively part of the culture of Romania? I'm just very uncomfortable with this privileging of the nation-state. -- Jmabel 18:12, Sep 30, 2004 (UTC)
Jewish culture and religion certainly have strong historic ties (if not its origin, mainly) with Israel, so I think it should at least be in that category, but yes the geographical scope of Jewish culture is certainly bigger, partly due to the widespread religional aspect of this culture, partly due to the historic diasporas. Ethnic minority cultures of a country could be listed under the "ethicity" category, as I suggested, but I would also like to see these categorized under the geographical nations if possible, which in the case of the Roma people isn't the case (I suspect), but in many other cases this can be done by using a few countries in the categorization. I don't agree that this is "privileging the nation state". In a geographical sense these cultures are part of the country (or some countries), and perhaps also in many other ways (economy, technology, art, etc.). It makes sense to also have some of these cultures listed in the country categories, since it will also show readers the minority-cultures within that nation when they browse through "culture by country". [edit] Culture by country or Culture by nationality?

The tag at the top says this category is at Category:Culture by nationality and articles should be there, and this category should be empty. The situation, however, is the exact opposite. What is the way it should be? JIP | Talk 05:23, 24 March 2006 (UTC)

Category:Culture by nationality was just recently introduced as a replacement for this. I think it's the right way to go. - Jmabel | Talk 06:14, 30 March 2006 (UTC)
