Cuddlebuddy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A cuddlebuddy is a type of interpersonal relationship involving non-sexual touch.
In essence, it is not an intermediate between friendship and a sexual relationship - it is an end in itself. Cuddlebuddy relationships are similar in theory to cuddle parties, the main difference being that the cuddlebuddy relationship is a one-on-one experience.
Participants are usually friends beforehand and there tends to be more agreement and consultation than during the transition between friendship and intimate relationship.
Both parties agree on their limits for non-sexual touch, and while sexual arousal is common, it is accepted gracefully and not acted upon.
Other prevailing characteristics include:
- Non-exclusivity - the cuddlebuddy may have other cuddlebuddies or be involved in a traditional relationship.
- Short duration - as there is a minimum of obligation involved, the cuddlebuddy relationship is unstable in the face of changing circumstances (eg: one person enters a monogamous relationship)
- The cuddlebuddy might be seen as a refuge from the primary social group and thus an occasional friend, or as close friends in regular contact.
- Alleviation of feelings of alienation, depression and anxiety.
- Unwillingness of both parties to commit to a more traditional sexual relationship - it should not be seen as consolation for unrequited love.
- A disregard for the cuddlebuddy's gender and sexual orientation - the criterion should only be the ability to create an atmosphere of warmth and comfort in each other's presence.
Biologically, oxytocin is thought to be responsible for the neurological effects during a cuddlebuddy relationship.
