[edit] An Interview by PixelBureau last April 13, 2006
- Could you introduce yourself and share to us how you ended up in the design world?
I'm Christian, a fresh High School graduate and incoming Computer Science student of University of Santo Tomas and I've been a Graphic Designer since 2003. Entering the design world back when I was google-ing for sports wallpapers, I stumbled upon West Coast Remix and was amazed at their designs. Before long I was introduced to Adobe Photoshop and started to design graphics as a hobby.
I did webdesigns early 2005 when a fellow WCRemix crew member asked me to create a design CarlosArroyo.com, the official site of the Puerto Rican NBA player. A month later I finished the design and code (without pay, haha). After a while I was surprised at the responses I got, and soon many asked me to design their websites as well. Just recently I joined Wowenkho|Studios and PhilWeavers for me to be distinguished as a true webdesigner.
- What is the story behind your site www.csj89.com? What is the evolution of the site?
The domain was acquired December 2005 when one of my designs won at a contest held at Lacrimae-Spiritus, and I was lucky enough that the prize was a domain of my choice and lifetime hosting. CSJ89 is in its 4th Version as a site and it’s my 6th Online Portfolio overall. Its purpose is to showcase my client and personal works since I began doing them. It is the first time I used full-on flash for my ‘folio because before I had my old dial-up and I resented flash sites. But now I have Broadband and all those who don't will suffer...haha...not really. Soon an alternative low-bandwidth version of the site will be online. But for now just check out the site and enjoy the background music - The Final Countdown (song) by Europe (band), haha.
- What is the inspiration behind your creativity?
I get inspired usually by TV ads, magazines, billboards, music, websites, and traditional art by local and foreign artists. I make designs inspired by everyday stuff and I always add my style to any work I make.
- What sites do you frequently visit for design inspiration and challenges?
deviantART among others is a site that I frequently visit. There I get design inspirations from all around the world. CSS Zen Garden is also good as I’m getting into the web standards-compliant trend.
- Who would you say greatly influenced you in your design style?
Foreign Digital Artists like Alex Banks, Cristiano Siqueira, and Dan Meyer were great influences of my style. Local guys such as the people of Team Manila, Ryan Vergara, Erickson Enriquez, Drew Europeo are also great people na karapat-dapat lamang sambahin (Translation by Wikipedia, 17:42, 16 April 2006 (UTC): that we should respect).
- What is your thought on the Philippine Web Industry?
The Philippine Web Industry continues to grow and catching up to other established countries in the field, and many young designers like me are entering the industry. It has made its mark internationally with many successful Filipino webdesigners abroad, and up to now they continue to innovate.
- If there is one thing you can change from the web, what would it be?
Every browser would be Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer never existed.
- If you weren’t a designer, what do you see yourself to be?
I would be studying to be an engineer and/or a teacher.
- What keeps you busy besides your passion for design?
Playing basketball, watching DVDs, downloading music, listening to my imaginary iPod
- What would you advise a young aspiring designer (like you) who decides to take this career path?
Be yourself. Don’t be limited on what you think are your limits. Hehe, I don’t know if that makes sense but you get the idea. Also, carpe diem - seize the day, and don’t let opportunities go to waste.
- Anything you want to add?
I do cheap (PHP 10,000 = $ 200) static HTML brochure-type websites (not dynamic ones), anyone interested contact me – csjwcr@gmail.com haha.
