[edit] The basics

I'm Derek Williams, a 25-year-old Wikipedian. I'm not really active on Wikipedia anymore, so if you need to contact me please email!

My areas of expertise include algebraic number theory, public-key cryptography, and poker. I started and organized the PlanetMath Exchange and authored CryptoDerk's Vandal Fighter.

I am an administrator here and on Commons.

[edit] Education

I grew up in Oldham County, Kentucky and later moved to Louisville, Kentucky where I earned B.Sc. and M.Eng. degrees in Computer Engineering and Computer Science, from the University of Louisville's J.B. Speed School of Engineering. I spent a year as a researcher and student at the University of Waterloo, but am now currently finishing Ph.D. work in Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Louisville.

As part of my undergraduate education I worked for the United States Navy. I wrote code involved with the MK-34 Gun Weapon System on board cruisers and destroyers.

Towards the end of my undergraduate and during my first graduate degree I taught calculus 2 twice, calculus 3 once, C programming five times, and java once. Most of my old teaching materials, including a book I wrote, are available on my website.

I am a member of the following professional organizations: ACM, IEEE, IEEE-CS, IACR, CACR, AMS, and MAA. I am a member of the following honor societies: Tau Beta Pi, Golden Key, Upsilon Pi Epsilon, and Pi Mu Epsilon. Additionally, I am a member of Mensa and the "sekret kabal".
