Crunch Bandicoot (クランチ バンディクー Kuranchi Bandikū?) is a character in the Crash Bandicoot video game series. He is a large, buff burgundy bandicoot with a metal arm, army cargo pants and black boots. He made his first debut in Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex and has since become one of the most popular characters in the series, as well as one of the most contraversial.

[edit] Biography

In Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex, he was inadvertedly revealed by Doctor N. Gin at Uka Uka's bad guy convention in the process of coming up with one good plan. Doctor Neo Cortex explained that he laboured over Crunch day and night since the last time Crash defeated him. Crunch was created as a superweapon of unbelievable strength, but he was missing a power source. They decide to recruit the "Elementals", a group of destructive masks locked away by the Ancient Ancestors. If they used their power to bring Crunch to life, he'd be capable of crushing mountains, demolishing entire cities, and wiping Crash Bandicoot off the face of the Earth forever. However, thanks to Crash and Aku Aku, Crunch broke free of Dr. Cortex's control and joined the Bandicoots in both this and succeeding games.

[edit] Other Appearances

  • He appeared as a cameo in Crash Twinsanity in the crowd before the first boss. In the cameo, Dr. Neo Cortex arranges a crowd of past villains to attend Crash's "birthday party". Among the villains in the crowd was Crunch, wearing a green crown and holding a birthday cake with one candle on it, believing it really was Crash's birthday. For some strange reason, he seemed to be much smaller than he was in the preceding game (Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex).
  • In Crash Nitro Kart, Crunch is shown living with the Bandicoots (Coco Bandicoot, and Crash Bandicoot). In this, and a few other games before and after this, Crunch spends most of his time helping them, along with Aku Aku, save the world from Dr. Neo Cortex's evil schemes in his goal to rule the world. In the Vicarious Visions games, he is often seen weightlifting. As pointed out in Crash Nitro Kart, he thinks of it as a better alternative to going on a diet. In his own words, the best way to losing weight and keeping it off is to "just eat less and exercise more".
  • In "Crash Tag Team Racing", Crunch makes another return as a playable character within races. He is once again shown working alongside the bandicoots and is often seen exercising and bodybuilding to keep himself in shape.

[edit] Criticism

In Crash Tag Team Racing, as most of the characters have very strange personality changes, Crunch seemed to style himself after Mr. T, adopting his personality and spurting random morals about personal hygiene and obeying your parents. It is also revealed that he sleeps with a Pinky Bear. Many fans dislike this version of Crunch, some even to the point of dismissing the Crunch in CTTR as a fake (which is untrue). In addition, as he was developed quite a bit in this game, Crunch's facial features changed a bit as well. Another oddity worth pointing out is his metallic left ear, first seen in this game.

Crunch is playable in Crash Boom Bang!, and despite the front cover showing the same model used in Tag Team Racing, a model similar to that seen in The Wrath of Cortex is used in the game, and all of the characters don't really seem to have any kind of personality.

Overall, Crunch has arguably become one of the most controversial characters in the series.
