Crows Nest, New South Wales
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Crows Nest is a suburb approximately five kilometres north of downtown Sydney, New South Wales, on the lower North Shore. It is shared between the municipalities of North Sydney, Willoughby and Lane Cove.
[edit] History
Edward Wollstonecraft founded Crows Nest in 1819 when he received a 524 acre (2.1 km²) land grant encompassing both the modern-day suburb and Wollstonecraft. He named the parcel Crows Nest Farm, and erected a home, Crows Nest House, on what was to become the building site of North Sydney Demonstration School. According to his associate Alexander Berry, Wollstonecraft chose the house's name "on account of its elevated and commanding position". Berry died at Crows Nest House on 30 November 1873.
[edit] Crows Nest today
Today the suburb houses a significant commercial district—noted for its varied shops and restaurants—located at the junction of five main roads on the highest point of elevation in Crows Nest, about 1km north by northwest of the original site of Crows Nest House. The gates of Crows Nest House still stand at the Pacific Highway entrance to North Sydney Demonstration School.
