Cross Fusion (クロスフュージョン Kurosu Fyūjon) is a fictional term used in the MegaMan NT Warrior (Rockman EXE) anime series. Through the use of a "Synchro Chip" (シンクロチップ Shinkuro Chippu) while in a "Dimensional Area," a NetNavi and its operator can merge into one being.

[edit] Description

Cross Fusion can only be initiated when the operator's surroundings are enveloped by the Dimensional Area dome. This feature combines both net data and flesh together, allowing NetNavis to transfer to the real world. With Cross Fusion, an operator and his/her Navi can fight together without the need of downloading (slotting in) BattleChips.

The factor that determines whether or not an operator is able to Cross Fuse is known as the "Synchro Rating." A person with a higher rate is more likely able to Cross Fuse than one who has a low rate. [1] If an operator and his/her Navi are ever arguing or not getting along, Cross Fusion is not possible. [2] The operator and Navi must be in perfect harmony in order for the transformation to take place. The operators also risk possible danger, as their bodies cannot be repaired or restored like a Navi's data.

Cross Fusion was introduced in Axess with only Lan Hikari (Netto Hikari) and Chaud Blaze (Enzan Ijuin) possessing the ability. Misaki, Ms. Yuri (Yuriko Ozono) and Dr. Regal all used "Dark Synchro Chips" (ダークシンクロチップ Dāku Shinkuro Chippu), which allow anyone to Cross Fuse, but with the side effects of Dark Chips. [3]

[edit] History

Cross Fusion becomes the main plot point of Stream. All the operators from Battle Network 5, with the exception of Ribitta (Kero Midorikawa) and Higsby (Yamitaro Higure) gain the ability to Cross Fuse. At the beginning of Stream, the new PET design pre-installs BattleChips for the process, whereas in Axess, chips had to be downloaded individually before initiating Cross Fusion. The overuse of Cross Fusion is frowned upon by some for taking away from the main focal point of the series and also giving the series a "villain of the week" theme.

Cross Fusion continues to be used in Beast, but not to the same degree. Again, the new PET design serves an additional function for Cross Fusion: the Jetburner, a form of rocket propulsion that permits flight. [4] Only Lan, Chaud, and Raika (Laika) utilize this feature. Leading up to the finale of Beast, the Cross Fusion members return to fend off the Zoanoroid army.

Beast+ reveals that scans can be conducted while Cross Fused in order to determine the weak points of enemies. [5] In episode 9, Blackbeard (Captain Kurohige) and Yuika (Chirol) obtained the "Reverse Synchro Chips" (逆シンクロチップ Gyaku Shinkuro Chippu) created by Dr. Wily, and, mistaking them for regular Synchro Chips, were transferred to the cyberworld, fused with their Navis. As stated by Dusk (Dark Miyabi), the chips were incomplete, and would have eventually resulted in their erasure, had Wily not rescued them in the knick of time.

[edit] Trivia

  • The Rush Synchro Chip, although first used by ShadeMan to enter the real world without a Dimensional Area, can also enhance the user's synchro rating. It is created when Rush combines with the Synchro Chip around his neck. When used by Maylu, she also gains the ability to summon viruses and produce "Rush Holes" to swallow up enemies.
  • During Cross Fusion in the Japanese version, a Navi's name gains the prefix "R-". (i.e. R-Rockman, R-Blues, R-Searchman, etc.)
  • When Raika, Tesla, Pride, or Baryl Cross Fuse, pieces of clothing or accessories that the operators wear are broken down into data. On occasion, Raika's hat fails to rematerialize after a Dimensional Area is removed, and those belonging to Pride never return at all, except in the case of episode 25 of Beast.
