Crisis Zone is a spin-off of the popular Time Crisis arcade shooters. The player is part of the elite Anti-Terrorist trooper of the Special Tactical Force (STF), Claude McGarren. The game uses the same pedal system to reload and hide. However, the player uses a fully automatic machine gun, a customized Steyr Mannlicher TMP with a Laser Aiming Sight and a capacity of 40 rounds. Players take cover behind a portable riot shield that is strapped to the character's left arm. Crisis Zone is the first Time Crisis game to date to allow the player to select between three levels to play in any order. Upon completion of all three of them, the player can then play the final level to beat the game.

A PlayStation 2 port of the game was released in 2004 with smoother polygon textures, higher difficulty, and an additional mission taking place six months after the Crisis Zone Arcade mode. The PS2 port was titled Time Crisis: Crisis Zone and used the GunCon 2 device.

[edit] Storyline

[edit] Garland Square

Garland Square recently opened on the outskirts of London. This urban complex contains hotels, a mall, a park, and an office complex. Unfortunately, the entire facility has been overrun by a terrorist organization known as the U.R.D.A., headed by Derrick Lynch. The terrorists have made no demands, neither they have any motives. Facing an unknown threat, the government thus concludes that the U.R.D.A. must be stopped at all costs and Lynch must not be allowed to execute his hidden agenda, whatever it may be. With the aforementioned in mind, the Special Tactical Force has been ordered to liberate Garland Square and suppress the U.R.D.A. Squad 1, the task force responsible for the liberation of Garland Square, is led by Claude McGarren.

The STF arrives at the Square and encounters heavy resistance from the U.R.D.A., which use everything from a tank to helicopters in an effort eliminate Squad 1, but are ultimately unsuccessful in their attempt. Inside the Garland Tech Center, Squad 1 had to battle out 2 URDA Special Agents (Tiger and Edgey) before recapturing Garland Square. Although Garland Square was successfully recaptured by the STF, Claude became puzzled at the absence of Lynch, who was supposed to be in the complex with his men. At that moment headquarters alerts Squad 1 with disturbing information: it seems that Garland Electric had built an experimental atomic reactor 5km below Garland Square. Deducing this to be Lynch's target, Squad 1 mobilizes and heads to the reactor control room. Despite the heavy resistance from Lynch's elite units, Squad 1 succeeds in killing him and Claude was able to deactivate the reactor with less than 5 seconds before meltdown. Although their mission was completed and they were free to go home, Squad 1 discovered the elevator ceased to function, and realized that there's no other option but to take the 5km stairway en route to the surface.

[edit] Grassmarket District

Six months has passed since Garland Square was secured. While the U.R.D.A. was thought to have been defeated, they are actually not because a new mastermind named Jared Hunter assembled a team of remnants and is currently holding Grassmarket District hostage. As an insurance policy, Hunter also kidnaps S.T.F. Commander Kessler's daughter, Melissa, hoping to lure the S.T.F. into their doom. While Jared Hunter demands his comrades freed in exchange for the freedom of both Grassmarket District and Melissa Kessler, in reality, he wants to kill the S.T.F. as a vehicle to avenge the death of Derrick Lynch and the prevention of the Garland Square incident.

Claude McGarren and Squad 1 was summoned once again to eliminate the U.R.D.A. remnants holding Grassmarket District hostage, but Commander Kessler all of a sudden got speechless as he knew that his daughter Melissa was kidnapped by Hunter. Claude said that he and Squad 1 will rescue Melissa and gives Commander Kessler his word.

Arriving at Grassmarket Street, Claude and Squad 1 engaged the enemy and secured Grassmarket Street, they ran into an invisible vehicle known as the A-0940. In spite of the A-0940 being a tough vehicle to deal with, McGarren was able to destroy it. Squad 1 now penetrated Belforte Hotel, but not before Jared Hunter started deploying the aerial units to off Squad 1. Climbing up the hotel, Claude found Melissa to be OK, but not before Jared Hunter landed a surprise attack on McGarren. One of the junior Squad 1 troopers was ordered to take care of Melissa while Claude and his close associates duke it out with Jared Hunter. After a tough fight, Hunter fell off the hotel roof, but he was able to find a way to slip through McGarren's fingers. As Jared Hunter slid through Crimson Sea, McGarren realized that Hunter used the supposed suicide attempt just to get away. Claude then boarded an S.T.F.-owned helicopter to chase after Hunter. An Air-To-Sea fight ensued between McGarren and Hunter, with Claude McGarren coming out as the victor.

With the hostages rescued, McGarren returned to Belforte Hotel from the Crimson Sea Air-To-Sea fight, seeing that Melissa is unscathed. Calling the mission a success, Commander Kessler thanked Claude personally for ensuring the unscathed safety of his daughter. For Commander Kessler, he knew that Claude McGarren is known to be the most loyal S.T.F. Trooper of all time.
