A Kritikos Ichnilatis (Cretan Hound) (Greek:Kρητικός Iχνηλάτης) is a hunting breed of dog from the island of Crete, in Greece. It is considered to be one of the oldest hunting breeds in Europe, with a history that goes back to 4,000 years ago.
In general, a dog is human's best friend. It has accompanied him with unique loyalty for about ten thousand years. Through the passage of these decades, many breeds were lost and others were degenerated, mostly by human interference. However, one of the most ancient breeds that lasted until today is, without doubt, the "Cretan Hound" and this is confirmed with much historical data regarding its origin as much as by its morphologic characteristics. This is a multi-talented dog that comes directly to us (for us) from a long and particularly glorious age of Cretan Island. So this ancient "patriot" of ours, it is very important to make him known world wide as he is extremely gifted and this is not a debt only for Cretan's but for all of us that want to nominate anything Greek. The plethoric qualities of a "Cretan Hound" are most certainly impressive. Suggestively we mention that never in another dog breed so many advantages were found: Excellent scent, speed, agility, durability, that make him an exceptional hare hunter. Cretan Hounds also have guarding instincts as well as pastoral instincts.
