Creswell Hall

Creswell Hall is a first-year co-ed dormitory at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. It is named after Mary Ethel Creswell, the first woman to receive an undergraduate degree at the university. Creswell, or 'the Well', as it is commonly known among students, is located in proximity to the UGA Food Service's Bolton Dining Hall. The East-West provides direct service to Creswell Hall, while the Ag Hill and Russell Hall bus routes stop at nearby Russell Hall.

[edit] Student life

With a population of 965 students, Creswell is known for its sense of community. Creswell is comprised of nine floors with four halls on every floor, so that it is in the shape of a "T". At the tip of the "T", from right to left, are A and B Halls, while the remaining long halls are known as C and D Halls. The ninth floor is the only floor with movable furniture and is often called the Penthouse Suite.

The Creswell Community Council has won the Hall Council of the Year award at the annual NRHH/RHA Banquet for the past four years.

UGA Housing often sponsors Creswell Community events. For instance, a typical Creswell gathering may be a petting zoo set up in either of the dormitory's lounges. Other examples include a midnight Chick-fil-A breakfast during finals or a riveting game of Capture the Flag.

The Major Mondays program meets in Creswell every Monday to discuss career options or address concerns students may have about their major.

The ninth floor of Creswell is most commonly referred to as "The Penthouse" because it has higher ceilings than the other floors.

Scott Oliver is the Area Coordinator, and Peter Moes is the Assistant Area Coordinator.

The 2006-2007 Creswell Communcil Council includes: President: Marcus Van Brooks; Vice-President: Katie Pniewski; Secretary: Colleen Schenning; Treasurer: David Yaffe; Publicist 1: Mario Haynes; RHA Rep: Christina Majdalani; RHA Rep: Javier Johnson; RHA Rep: Blake Bliss; RHA Rep: Brian Burnham;

[edit] Creswell Crapper

Started in the 2005-2006 school year, the Creswell Crapper is a bi-monthly periodical published by students in Creswell. 'The Crapper' is usually one page, and covers recent events or 'hot button' issues for Creswell residents. The Crapper is distributed in bathrooms throughout Creswell, and is taped to the back of the bathroom stall doors, so residents have something to read. The Crapper originally included a comic strip entitled "Procrastination," but the creator eventually abandoned the comic due to frequent censorship from the Creswell staff.

[edit] Services and amenities

Creswell offers its residents an academic advising office, located on the first floor, which allows students in many programs to be advised without having to leave their dorm.

Also located on the bottom floor are spacious, newly renovated study areas. All study lounges are covered by UGA's wireless network, "PAWS" (Personal Access Wireless/Walkup System). In addition, Creswell Hall is home to a 24-hour computer lab, complete with high-speed Internet access and printing. Washers, driers, and vending machines complete the main floor ensemble, all of which accept Bulldog Bucks, a system of payment that utilizes UGA's student identification card.

[edit] Fire alarms

Creswell is well known for its frequent fire alarms. A typical Creswell fire alarm occurs between 1:00 and 5:00 AM, and results in the residents being outside for between one and two hours. Most fire alarms result from burning popcorn or other food in the microwave or sports taking place in the hall; however, other sources (i.e. students playing with fire extinguishers) have also been known to trip the alarm. In fact, there are many ways the alarms are set off, most of which involve something or someone hitting a smoke detector or sprinkler in a room or hall. It is often joked that the Athens-Clarke County Fire Department would save money if they built a station next to the dormitory.
