Creggan, County Londonderry

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Creggan, County Londonderry, is a large housing estate in Derry. It was the first housing estate built in Derry with the purpose of housing Catholics. It is situated on the outskirts of the city and is built on a hill. The name Creggan is derived from the Gaelic word creagán meaning stony place. There are many youth organisations set up in order to aid the development of youth in the Creggan area. These include numerous football clubs, such as Don Bosco's F.C. and Trojans F.C.. Creggan has many schools, most of which were set up to aid the Catholic youth, who in previous years had not received formal education. People to have benefitted from this include Martin McGuinness.[citation needed]
