Crash Team Racing (クラッシュ バンディクー レーシング Kurasshu Bandikū Rēshingu?, Crash Bandicoot Racing) is a racing game for the PlayStation, made by Naughty Dog. It was released in 1999. It is very similar to Mario Kart, although CTR takes much longer to beat. This was the last Crash game made by Naughty Dog. After this game, they left Universal Interactive Studios (now Vivendi Games) and became an in-house developer for SCEA.

[edit] Gameplay

Gameplay is similar to that of Mario Kart; the following are gameplay elements original to CTR. Collecting ten wumpa fruit improves any item used. The game has a special "power slide" move that gives the player a speed boost while turning. It should be noted that in the last Jak and Daxter game from Naughty Dog: Jak X: Combat Racing also has a "power slide" which gives you an extra speedboost.

In the races, boxes contain weapons or other powerups that give the player an advantage. Green and black arrows on the ground (turbo boosters) will give the player a short speed increase. Most of the courses contain obstacles that cause a loss of speed, and must be avoided.

As in Mario Kart, CTR has a battle mode, in which players attack each other in one of several special battle arenas, some of which are unlockable.

Collectible items include trophies, crystals, gems, and relics. A number of secret characters can be activated throughout the course of the game.

[edit] Story

[edit] Prologue

Kart-racing is all the rage on Earth, as Crash and the gang have been recently racing their hearts out. Unfortunately, a manevolent extraterrestrial named Nitrous Oxide catches wind of this, and travels to Earth's to compete. He claims that he is the fastest racer in the Galaxy, traveling the stars looking for creatures to test his skill. He then challenges Earth to a "little game" he calls "Survival of the Fastest", and explains the rules: Oxide challenges the best racer on Earth, and they race for the planet. If Earth's driver wins, Oxide will leave Earth alone. But if Oxide wins, he'll turn the entire globe into a concrete parking lot, and make Earth's inhabitants his slaves. The drivers of Earth prepare to race for the fate of their planet.

[edit] Epilogues

Because this would be the last Crash game Naughty Dog would work on, epilogues were created for each character in the game, depicting their fates after the events of CTR. These are, of course, considered non-canonical.

  • Crash sold his life story to a major movie studio. The film entitled "The Color Orange" will be released for the Christmas season. Crash can now be found somewhere on a beach down under doing what he does best... dancing and napping.
  • Cortex went back to scientific research and discovered a new element in the periodic table. Numerous lawsuits failed to change the name he boldly chose for Element 117... CORTEXRULESTHEWORLDIUM.
  • Tiny Tiger moved to Beverly Hills and founded the popular chain of "Pain 'N Gain" fitness clubs. His Tiny-Bo exercise video made millions on infomercials around the globe.
  • Coco went on to start her own Internet dating service. Although her company is still in the red, the share prices are going through the roof!
  • N. Gin opened a custom auto parts store in Toledo, Ohio. The store closed after a massive recall when his patented "clear-the-road" missile system sparked havoc on the nation's freeways.
  • Dingodile went on to found an animal breeding program for the creation of unique and interesting pets. His motto "combine them all" spurred such successes as the Gir-bat, Kanga-rooster, and the Dingo-Rilla.
  • Pura joined the Las Vegas tiger show of Zigfield and Floyd. His starring role came to a disastrous end one day when Pura accidentally closed his mouth a bit too early. Floyd will be sadly missed. (Take note that the game was released 4 years before Roy's tiger injury on October 3, 2003.)
  • Pinstripe became a used car salesman in New Jersey. As top salesman each month he smirks, "People decide on a car quickly once my tommy gun comes out."
  • Papu Papu joined the Wild Wrestling Association and changed his ring name to Mr. Bad Belly. His signature move the "Bad Belly Bounce" was finally banned by the WWA after three wrestlers suffered severe rope friction burns.
  • Komodo Joe opened "Honest Joe's Wedding Ring and Rare Gem Outlet" in Zurich. After a series of sting operations Joe was convicted of laundering stolen Cubic Zirconias from the Couch Slouch shopping network.
  • N. Tropy began tinkering with his time machine hobby again. He was last seen entering a time warp ball traveling to some ancient rain forest. Alas, rust is timeless.
  • Nitros Oxide went back to the planet Gasmoxia a broken alien. After years of psychotherapy, Oxide emerged from seclusion to begin racing again. Unfortunately the unicycle was a poor vehicle choice and his resulting accident was too gruesome to detail here.
  • Ami became a race kart driver herself, saying, " I'm sick of giving out trophies! I want a few of my own!"
  • Megumi shortly unveiled her new line of perfume called "Odecoot" featuring the alluring scent of fermenting Wumpa Fruit.

[edit] Reception

The game was critically praised by critics and fans for its numerous tracks and options, and is considered by both to be one of the best games in the Crash series. Other fans were put off by the weak storyline and overall ease.

[edit] Trivia

  • Crash Cove is based on N. Sanity Island
  • Sewer Speedway is based on the sewer levels in Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back.
  • Coco Park's hills (shown in the cutscene from beyond the track) are based on the fields from the level "Bye, Bye Blimps" from Crash 3.
  • Tiger Temple and Papu's Pyrimid is based on the ruin levels in Crash 1 and 2.
  • Dingo Canyon is based on the motor cycle levels in Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped.
  • Polar Pass is based on the snow levels in Crash 2. A few things such as the frozen bear and the seals can be recognized.
  • Dragon Mines is based on the Koala Kong level in Crash 1.
  • Tiny Arena, Slide Coloseum, and Turbo track have a special backround that is based on the future levels in Crash 3.
  • Cidadel City is really the Cortex Castle. Things such as the blimp, the technology, and the stain glass portraits of Cortex, N. Tropy, N. Gin, Tiny, and Dingodile can be easily recognized. Cortex Castle, the race track, is also based on the real Cortex Castle, but looks nothing like it. However, the giant spiders are from the level "Jaws of darkness" from Crash 1.
  • N. Gin Labs is supposed to be a part of the Cortex Castle.
  • Oxide Station is based on Cortex's space station (aka the Cortex Vortex) from Crash 2.
  • The music from Coco park is very similar to the China levels in Crash 3.
  • This game has some characters that haven't been seen for a while such as Papu Papu, Pinstripe, Ripper Roo, and Komodo Joe.
  • The opening cutscene shows the hills beyond Coco Park, but througout the rest of the game, you never see them. Also, when you see all the characters get ready to race, the camera zooms through several levels, and before you see Dingodile getting ready, the camera goes through an unknown level.
  • This game was the last Crash game that was developed by Naughty Dog.
  • Mystery Caves is Fake Crash's track, because he is somewhat of a mystery character.
  • Nitros Oxide's hover car is based on the hover cars flown by lab assistants in Crash 3.
