Cowpunk

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cowpunk or Country Punk is a subgenre of punk rock that began in southern California in the 1980s, especially Los Angeles. It combined punk rock with country and blues both in sound, subject matter, attitude, and style. It tended to downplay the fashion elements associated with the musically similar British psychobilly movement, and grew directly out of the influence of bands like The Cramps and The Gun Club with few direct ties to the British movement.

[edit] Cowpunk Bands

Bands associated with cowpunk include The Gun Club, The Meat Puppets, Dinosaur Jr., Jason and the Scorchers, The Crocketts, Blood On The Saddle, Rubber Rodeo, The Lazy Cowgirls, The Screamin' Sirens, Frank Black and the Catholics, Lucky and the Bastards, Tex and the Horseheads, early Vandals, Rank and File, Everclear, The Rave Ups, Beat Rodeo, The Beat Farmers, The Mekons, and the late ex-Surf Punks singer Scott Goddard. Social Distortion were initially a melodic hardcore punk band, but in the late 1980s they incorporated cowpunk elements.

Canadian singer k.d. lang's earliest albums can also be characterized as cowpunk, although she gradually evolved toward a more traditional country style. The Danish rock band Disneyland After Dark (now known as D-A-D) also started out playing cowpunk.

The influence of cowpunk today can be heard in Throw Rag, Red Shift, Reverend Horton Heat, The Supersuckers, and Hetten Des. Cowpunk influence can be heard in some punk blues bands such as Nashville Pussy.
